Barton loses QPR captaincy, fined 6 weeks' wages

LONDON (AP) -Queens Park Rangers stripped Joey Barton of the captaincy and fined him six weeks' wages on Monday for his violent conduct against Manchester City players in the final round of the Premier League last season.

Last month, Barton was banned for 12 matches by the English Football Association and fined 75,000 pounds ($118,000) for elbowing Carlos Tevez, kicking Sergio Aguero and trying to head-butt Vincent Kompany before being escorted off the Eastlands pitch by his teammates.

"The club has also reached agreement with Barton that if he seriously breaches the club's disciplinary procedures again, the club reserves the right to terminate his contract," QPR said in a statement.

The 29-year-old midfielder will also miss QPR's pre-season tour of Asia in July.

Barton, who was arrested earlier this month on suspicion of affray after being involved in an altercation outside a nightclub, was contrite about his actions during a match in which his team only narrowly avoided relegation.

"I was reckless and deserved every punishment I received," he said on Twitter. "Money comes and goes, it's not important to me. Losing the captaincy and missing 12 games, is what really hurts. I was stupid and that what happens when u do dumb things. I am confident (I'll) bounce back. Cannot wait."

Since joining QPR, Barton has spent the last year - primarily through Twitter - trying to convince the public that he is no longer the volatile person who was previously jailed for a street assault and accumulated a long list of fines and bans from the FA.

At his first club, Man City, Barton punched a teammate in the eye during training and pushed a lit cigar into a teenage teammate's eye at a Christmas party.

After that incident in December 2004, Barton had another row with a 15-year-old Everton fan in Bangkok and was fined eight weeks' wages by City. The following season, Barton dropped his shorts and exposed his backside to Everton fans and was fined for misconduct.

In 2007, Barton appeared to have straightened out his life and he even received a call-up to the England team, going on as a substitute in a 1-0 loss to Spain.

But the bad behavior soon returned and he was arrested after a violent argument with a taxi driver. He was then suspended by City after punching teammate Ousmane Dabo during training, which later led to a suspended jail sentence and the FA suspending him for six games.

Barton transferred to Newcastle in 2008 but he was arrested in Liverpool after a street brawl and eventually received a six-month jail sentence for assault and fighting.

Barton was allowed to leave Newcastle on a free transfer in August 2011 following his public criticism of the club.

Lichen survives in space: Could it colonize planets by hitching rides on asteroids?

ScienceDaily (June 23, 2012) ? You can freeze it, thaw it, vacuum dry it and expose it to radiation but still life survives. ESA's research on the International Space Station is giving credibility to theories that life came from outer space -- as well as helping to create better sunscreens.

In 2008 scientists sent the suitcase-sized Expose-E experiment package to the Space Station filled with organic compounds and living organisms to test their reaction to outer space.

When astronauts venture on a spacewalk, hours are spent preparing protective suits to survive the hostile conditions. No effort was made to protect the bacteria, seeds, lichen and algae attached to the outside of the Space Station, however.

"We are exploring the limits of life," explains ESA's Ren? Demets.

Our atmosphere does a wonderful job of protecting life on Earth by absorbing harmful UV rays and keeping temperatures relatively stable.

In contrast, the space samples endured the full power of the Sun's rays. The samples were insulated somewhat by the Space Station but still had to cope with temperatures changing from -12?C to +40?C over 200 times as they orbited Earth.

The samples returned to Earth in 2009 and the results have now been published in a special issue of the journal Astrobiology.

Lichen have proven to be tough cookies -- back on Earth, some species continue to grow normally.

Ren? explains, "These organisms go into a dormant state waiting for better conditions to arrive."

The lichen have attracted interest from cosmetic companies. They can survive the full power of the Sun for 18 months, so knowing more could lead to new ingredients for sunscreen.

Living organisms surviving in open space supports the idea of 'panspermia' -- life spreading from one planet to another, or even between solar systems.

It seems possible that organisms could colonize planets by hitching rides on asteroids. ESA is probing this intriguing theory further on future Station missions with different samples.

Turkey: Syria shot down our warplane

Updated at 5:30 p.m. Friday ET: The office of Turkey's prime minister said early Saturday that?Syria?downed a Turkish F-4 air force jet?over the Mediterranean. The Syrian military, in a statement circulated on state media, said the plane was flying over its waters.

Turkey will take all necessary measures ?decisively? once all the details of the incident emerge, said the office of Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan after a two-hour security meeting. It did not specify what the steps would be.

Search and rescue operations forthe warplane's missing airmen were continuing, Erdogan's office said.

Syria's military said, "Our air defenses confronted a target that penetrated our air space over our territorial waters pre-afternoon on Friday and shot it down. It turned out to be a Turkish military plane."

Of Friday,?Erdogan told?reporters at a news conference covered by NBC?News he could not say whether the plane had crashed or been shot down.

"The chief of general staff has made the necessary statement about the missing plane. I am not saying it was brought down at the point it fell. It is not possible to say this without knowing the exact facts," Erdogan said.

He said he wasn't aware of any Syrian claims of responsibility for bringing down the plane or of earlier reports that?Syrian authorities had apologized.?

Earlier, Lebanon's Hezbollah-owned Al-Manar television station said?that Syrian air defenses shot down a Turkish military aircraft, quoting Syrian security sources.?

"Syrian security sources confirmed to a Manar correspondent in Damascus that Syrian defense forces shot down the Turkish fighter jet," a news flash on the Beirut-based station said.??

Pro-Iranian Al-Mayadeen television station, which is based in Lebanon, also quoted what it said were Turkish sources as saying a jet had been shot down by Syrian air defenses.

Turkey -- a member of NATO --?said it had lost contact with a plane while it was over the sea off the southeastern coast, and a television station said it had crashed in Syrian territorial waters.?

In a statement, Turkey's military said it lost radar and radio contact with the plane after it took off from Erhac Airport in the eastern province of Malatya.?

Two crew were aboard the F-4 at the time of the crash, the Turkish state news agency Anatolia said on its website, citing Malatya governor Ulvi Saran.?

Turkish warplanes regularly patrol along and off Turkey's southern Mediterranean coast.

Turkey has joined nations such as the U.S. in saying that Syrian President Bashar Assad should step down because of the uprising in his country. Turkey also has set up refugee camps on its border for more than 32,000 Syrians who have fled the fighting.

You've probably already noticed, but Twitter went down for a while today. In theory, this means that productivity should have?skyrocketed around the world???as soon as we all stopped frantically trying to refresh our Twitter feeds.

We don't know much about the outage, but Twitter did add a message to its official status page, pointing out that "users may be experiencing issues accessing" the social networking service when things came crashing down. Some users were seemingly?able to access Twitter through mobile.twitter.com?throughout the outage, though.

By late Thursday afternoon, Twitter issued this update via its @twittercomms account: "Today's outage is due to a cascaded bug in one of our infrastructure components. We'll provide updated information soon."?A cascaded bug has an effect that isn't confined to a particular software element; its effect "cascades" into other elements as well.

ARRA News Service: It's Time For An American Economic Miracle ...

by Ralph Benko, Contributing Author: Our presidential candidates squared off in Ohio last week, each merrily indicting the policies of the other.? Both speeches lacked one crucial plank in their platforms.? Good jobs require good money.? The absence of good monetary policy is submerging the whole world in a second decade of ?Dark Ages? stagnation ? and misery.

Romney?s choice of Columbia business school dean R. Glenn Hubbard as a key economic adviser is promising. It means a Romney administration is more likely to adopt free market policies of economic growth than those offered by Mr. Obama.?Obama?s idea of collegial collaboration is to yank his tax increase leash and yell Heel! at Republicans. Obama is hampered by an attitude that treats businesspeople as alien and, other than as his campaign donors, fundamentally sinister. That?s a recipe for, well, 8.2% unemployment. But something important is missing from both.

Forbes.com and RealClearMarkets.com editor John Tamny nails the missing variable:

Unstable money values lead to chaotic pricing of investments and goods purchases in much the same way that an unstable minute would lead to a lot of burnt apple pies. Once this is understood it should be clear that stability of the measure of value is the goal?.

Tamny?s right. Good money was key to the Erhard German ?Economic Miracle? of 1948, the Wirtschaftswunder ? which started out from a much more dire baseline than America confronts. Ludwig Erhard took an utterly destroyed, destitute, and demoralized Germany from ruin to riches in stunning fashion. It is a forgotten story, but? Erhard, in his memoir Prosperity Through Competition, available through the generosity of the Mises Institute here, sums up the basis of the miracle:

?The big chance for Germany came in 1948: it depended on linking the currency reform with an equally resolute economic reform, so as to end once and for all the whole complex of State controls of the economy-from production to the final consumer-which, following in the wake of the people?s nonsensical demands, had lost all touch with reality. Today few can realize how much courage and sense of responsibility were needed for such a step. Some time later two Frenchmen, Jacques Rueff and Andre Piettre, summed up the combination of economic and currency reform thus:

?The black market suddenly disappeared. Shop windows were full of goods; factory chimneys were smoking; and the streets swarmed with lorries. Everywhere the noise of new buildings going up replaced the deathly silence of the ruins. If the state of recovery was a surprise, its swiftness was even more so. In all sectors of economic life it began as the clocks struck on the day of currency reform. Only an eye-witness can give an account of the sudden effect which currency reform had on the size of stocks and the wealth of goods on display. Shops filled up with goods from one day to the next; the factories began to work. On the eve of currency reform the Germans were aimlessly wandering about their towns in search of a few additional items of food. A day later they thought of nothing but producing them. One day apathy was mirrored on their faces while on the next a whole nation looked hopefully into the future.??

Good money (and low tax rates) were also the key to America?s great Industrial Revolution prosperity.? Economic historian Brian Domitrovic writes, in Forbes:

Booms in the 19^th century ? for example, 1875 to 1892 ? saw growth sustained for decades at 5.3%. A growth rate of 5.3% means that in just twenty-five years, the economy is two-thirds larger than under a rate of 3.3%.

?What was the secret to the outsized growth of the 19^th century, particularly its latter portion, the Gilded Age? There were great technological innovations and large population increases, to be sure ? but these things came in the 20^th century as well. What was different back then was the absence of macroeconomic institutions.

There was no Federal Reserve, and there was no income tax ?. No wonder we had such an incredible boom.?

Good money was fundamental to De Gaulle?s French Economic Miracle of 1958 engineered by the same Jacques Rueff cited by Erhard.? Good money was fundamental to the Reagan Revolution.? Reagan, with Fed Chairman Paul Volcker, reformed the papier m?ch? Carter Dollar ? and cut marginal tax rates.? Good money and lower marginal rates put America on course to drive its key stock market index from 1,000 to 14,000.

Gov. Romney, last January, told Larry Kudlow, ?You know, I?m happy to look at a whole range of ideas on how to have greater stability in our currency and in our monetary policies.? Romney senior economic adviser R. Glenn Hubbard, argues vigorously against the ?discretionary activism? of the Obama Fed in a book he recently co-authored, Seeds of Destruction, which entitles a chapter ?Why an Easy-Money Street is a Dead End.?

But in the Buckeye State the candidates were duking it out on tax, spending, and regulatory policy.? All of these are, of course, important.? If ?taxmaggedon? hits as scheduled in January America might well join in the collapse of the wobbly economies of Europe.? But neither candidate addressed, much less emphasized, the missing element required for job growth: good money.

The presidential candidates have dramatically differing views on what constitutes good monetary policy.? Obama seems to favor Chairman Bernanke?s central planning discretionary activism.? The GOP stands for what economist John Taylor called, in the Wall Street Journal, ?a ? more rules-based policy of the kind that has worked in the past.? Republican elites lean toward the Taylor Rule.? The GOP base ? including the followers of libertarian icon Ron Paul and Tea Party champion Herman Cain ? leans strongly toward the true gold standard (as detailed in the eponymous book by Lewis E. Lehrman, whose nonprofit Institute this writer professionally advises).

If Prof. Taylor is serious about a ?policy of the kind that has worked in the past? he need look no further than the work of the late Roy Jastram, professor in the School of Business Administration, Berkeley. Jastram?s work widely is considered, well, the gold standard on the performance of monetary standards in history. In 1981 Jastram summed up ?a key finding:

?From the time the United States went off the gold standard in 1933 the wholesale price level has gone up by 760%. Since England abrogated the gold standard in 1931 her price index number has risen by over 2000%.

?Before that the two countries had a combined history of 350 years of long-run price stability. The price level was the same in the United States in 1930 as it had been in 1800. In England the price index stood at 100.0 in 1717 (the first year of her gold standard) and it was at that figure again in 1930.?

Good jobs require good money. Rep. Kevin Brady, vice chairman of the Joint Economic Committee (with 42 House cosponsors) and Sen. Mike Lee have begun to move the monetary reform question on Capitol Hill.? These leaders are doing something important in helping to hammer out the missing variable in job creation, good money, and creating a forum where the proponents of the Taylor Rule and the proponents of the gold standard can make their respective cases.

Time, and past time, for an American Economic Miracle.? Good money is absolutely necessary for prosperity and for job creation.? Time for the presidential candidates to give us their recipes for good money instead of the discretionary paper dollar recipe for burnt apple pies.

19 tons of pot dumped at sea near U.S.-Mexico border

SAN DIEGO (AP) ? The U.S. Navy says an aircraft carrier group recovered about 19 tons of marijuana dumped from small boats in the Pacific Ocean near California's border with Mexico.

The Navy said Tuesday that two single-engine boats ? each about 25 feet long ? were spotted about 15 hours apart on Saturday. People aboard the boats began dumping plastic bags, and the boats escaped before authorities arrived.

Lt. Aaron Kakiel says no one was captured. The seizures occurred in international waters about 85 miles off the Mexican coast.

Authorities recovered about eight tons of marijuana from the first boat and 11 tons from the second. The carrier USS Nimitz and cruiser USS Princeton were assisted by the U.S. Coast Guard and Mexican navy.

Apple Store opening in London, Ontario on June 23rd

Apple will open another retail location in Canada this weekend. Those in London, Ontario will be warmly greeted with the usual Apple aura: balloons, free t-shirts and an ample amount of Apple products to peruse ? such as the iPhone 4S and the iPad. According to Apple?s website they plan on opening the Masonville location (1680 Richmond Street North) at 10:00am sharp. This will be the 23rd Apple Store in Canada.

Eurozone countries slowly reaching accord on tackling debt crisis, says George Osborne

"I think one thing we have learnt is: don't expect a single summit to solve the eurozone's problems, otherwise you are going to be disappointed," he said.

"I am not claiming that this summit has solved those problems but the eurozone is inching towards solutions."

No details of a possible scheme were available but it is thought that eurozone countries are considering using injections of funds through the European Central Bank or the single currency bailout mechanisms to shore up weaker countries like Greece and Spain.

Massive pressure has been placed on the EU members of the G20 in Los Cabos, particularly Germany, to take further action, after markets failed to respond to the recapitalisation of Spanish banks and the election of pro-bailout parties in Greece.

The resources would be designed to spread the risk of debt between the 17-nation euro bloc, and reduce the high interest rates on government bonds which have made it difficult for Athens, Madrid and Rome to service their debts.

A planned meeting between US President Barack Obama and the leaders of Germany, Italy, France and Spain, as well as Prime Minister David Cameron, was cancelled last night after the Americans decided enough progress was made in direct talks between Mr Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel earlier in the day.

Mr Osborne said: "There is no doubt that the problems now are in the eurozone but what the G20 can do is put pressure on the eurozone to fix those problems, add to the pressure that was already there. And it can take measures to prevent these problems spilling over even more than they are into the rest of the world economy, for example by resisting protectionist measures which some countries want to introduce."

By the time I was 11 years old my next-door neighbor, who was a few years older than me, had given me Nas? 1996 It Was Written album. Knowing that the explicit content would send my mom in a fury if she found it, I insisted she keep it, but she refused to take it back. Frightened, I sneaked it into our two bedroom apartment to add to the rest of my mostly R&B music collection. When I eventually popped it in to my CD player, I was in awe. It was that moment I fell in love with Nas? music ? and more in love with hip-hop.?That was 16 years ago.

For so many in my generation, hip-hop has served as the backdrop to our childhoods. Its appeal was not only the heart-pounding thump of the beats, or the coolness of the women and men rapping. Finally it seemed like someone was telling our story. Rap music spoke our language in a way nothing else did. It was the true essence of giving the voiceless a voice.

Hip-hop ?brainwashed? by infatuation with white women

As I plow through Tom Burrell?s book,?Brainwashed: Challenging the Myth of Black Inferiority, I think about how the black inferiority complex (BIC) plays out in pop culture and music, particularly rap.

One of the things that has become more prevalent in hip-hop is the adoration of white women, juxtaposed with its seeming hatred of black women in rap lyrics. Historically, white women had been off-limits for centuries ? black men were literally lynched; killed for allegedly whistling at white women. Therefore, snagging a white woman was the ultimate slap in the oppressors? face ? ?a ?look, I?ve made it and I have one of your women!? statement of sorts. Now, instead of rappers, en masse, toting white women on their arms, they parade them on wax.

Kanye West, whose music I happen to love dearly, has had a longtime obsession with the white aesthetic. His music tells the story better than I could. Visually, it has played out in his videos for songs like ?Runaway? and ?Monster.? ?Why did all the ballerinas in ?Runaway? have to be white? ?In ?Monster? we see the decapitated heads of white women hanging from ropes and rocking gold teeth. Most telling of his white girl fantasies was his cover art to MBDTF. But Kanye is far from alone in this line of thinking.

McDowell, Furyk face long day at Olympic

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Graeme McDowell knows how quickly it all can change on Sunday at the U.S. Open.

McDowell was three shots behind going into the final round at Pebble Beach two years ago when he watched Dustin Johnson hit wedge toward the second green and take five more shots for a triple bogey. Just like that, the lead was gone, and so was Johnson. He closed with an 82.

McDowell was in the final group against this year at The Olympic Club, only he had company. Not only was he tied with Jim Furyk, but 11 others were within four shots of the lead.

"It doesn't feel much different than two years ago," McDowell said Saturday night. "I guess I know what to expect now. That's probably the only difference. Emotionally, I went through the same experience today like I did two years ago. I was anxious and I was nervous. Two years ago, Saturday was a tough day for me. And hopefully tomorrow, I'll know what to expect for the day."

For a U.S. Open, expect anything.

Olympic has no water hazards, one fairway bunker and only two players under par. The bogeys come from getting out of position off the tee and even on the greens. The higher scores come from players unwilling to take their lumps after a poor shot.

History has not been kind to the leaders over the last decade.

Rory McIlroy was different, but he was playing a different kind of U.S. Open at Congressional, which was soft from rain and yielded a record score. Throw out his 69 in the final round, and you have to go all the way back to Tiger Woods at Pebble Beach in 2000 to find a 54-hole leader who broke par.

Aaron Baddeley had a two-shot lead going into the final round at Oakmont. He three-putted from 8 feet for a triple bogey on the opening hole and shot 80. Retief Goosen was going for his third U.S. Open title in five years at Pinehurst in 2005 when he took a three-shot lead into the final round. It was gone in three holes and he shot 81.

Such a closing round would not seem likely for McDowell and Furyk. Not only are they U.S. Open champions (then again, so was Goosen), they have controlled games and toughness that makes them equipped for a fight against par.

"It doesn't have to look or be fancy. It has to work," Furyk said. "And I think we have styles of games where we put the ball into play, we put the ball on the green and take our chance at the putt and then move on."

Even so, McDowell was more interested in looking behind him on the leaderboard instead of ahead to another Sunday celebration.

"It's wide open," he said. "I look at guys a 2- and 3- and 4-over par in this tournament, who I really think have a realistic shot to win," he said. "There's a fine line on this golf course between 67, 68 and 75, 76. There really is. It's a tough course. You've got to execute shots well. You've got to keep the ball on the correct side of the pin. And you've got to play well."

There's an eclectic mix of players in range.

Ernie Els is a three-time major champion. Lee Westwood is desperate for his first. Blake Adams is playing in his first U.S. Open. John Peterson, the NCAA champion from LSU, is a year removed from college. Beau Hossler, the 17-year-old wonder, still has another year of high school. Nicolas Colsaerts of Belgium can overpower a golf course. Jason Dufner, a two-time winner this year, prefers to plod his way around.

Not to be entirely overlooked is Tiger Woods, though he has never come from behind ? five shots, in this case ? to win a major.

And then there's the history of Olympic Club, that doesn't bode well for the favorites.

The winners of the four U.S. Opens at Olympic ? Jack Fleck, Billy Casper, Scott Simpson and Lee Janzen ? have a combined seven majors. The guys who finished second to them ? Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson and Payne Stewart ? collectively won 27 majors.

Perhaps that's why Olympic is known as the "graveyard of champions," that and the fact that Hogan, Palmer and Watson never won another major after their close calls at Olympic. The exception was Stewart, who won the U.S. Open the following year, but then perished in a freak plane crash that fall.

As the third round was headed for a conclusion, McDowell and Furyk showed their mettle by making key pars and a late birdie. Westwood had finished his 67, and then Els came through a 68 to get into the mix.

Suddenly this U.S. Open had its version of Hogan and Watson and Palmer.

But as the possibilities started to expand, that brought forth another question. Who's going to be Jack Fleck?
