Conn. gunman had hundreds of rounds of ammunition

NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) ? The gunman in the Connecticut shooting rampage was carrying an arsenal of hundreds of rounds of especially deadly ammunition ? enough to kill just about every student in the school if given enough time, authorities said Sunday, raising the chilling possibility that the bloodbath could have been even worse.

Hours later, President Barack Obama told mourners at a vigil that the nation is failing to keep its children safe. He pledged to seek change in memory of the 26 staffers and schoolchildren who were killed in the second-deadliest school shooting in U.S. history.

"What choice do we have?" Obama said. "Are we really prepared to say that we're powerless in the face of such carnage, that the politics are too hard?"

The gunman, Adam Lanza, shot himself in the head just as he heard police drawing near to the classroom where he was slaughtering helpless children, but he had more ammunition at the ready in the form of multiple, high-capacity clips each capable of holding 30 bullets.

The disclosure on Sunday sent shudders throughout this picturesque New England community as grieving families sought to comfort each other during church services devoted to impossible questions like that of a 6-year-old girl who asked her mother: "The little children, are they with the angels?"

With so much grieving left to do, many of Newtown's 27,000 people wondered whether life could ever return to normal. And as the workweek was set to begin, parents weighed whether to send their own children back to school.

Gov. Dannel Malloy said the shooter decided to kill himself when he heard police closing in about 10 minutes into the attack.

"We surmise that it was during the second classroom episode that he heard responders coming and apparently at that decided to take his own life," Malloy said on ABC's "This Week."

Police said they found hundreds of unused bullets at the school, which enrolled about 450 students in kindergarten through fourth grade.

"There was a lot of ammo, a lot of clips," said state police Lt. Paul Vance. "Certainly a lot of lives were potentially saved."

The chief medical examiner has said the ammunition was a type designed to expend its energy in the victim's tissues and stay inside the body to inflict the maximum amount of damage.

The sorrowful interfaith service was stark and spare, with a stage that held only a small table covered with a black cloth, candles and the presidential podium.

The newly re-elected president said in the coming weeks, he would use "whatever power this office holds" to engage with law enforcement, mental health professionals, parents and educators in an effort to prevent more tragedies like Newtown.

He promised to lead a national effort but left unclear what it would be and how much it would address the explosive issue of gun control.

Obama closed his remarks by slowly reading the first names of each of the 26 victims.

"God has called them all home," he said. "For those of us who remain, let us find the strength to carry on and make our country worthy of their memory."

Obama conceded that none of his words would ease the sorrow. But he declared to the community of Newtown: "You are not alone."

Privately, Obama told the governor that Friday was the most difficult day of his presidency.

Newtown officials couldn't say whether Sandy Hook Elementary School would ever reopen. The school district was considering sending surviving students to a former school building in nearby Monroe. But for many parents, it was much too soon to contemplate resuming school-day routines.

"We're just now getting ready to talk to our son about who was killed," said Robert Licata, the father of a boy who was at the school during the shooting but escaped harm. "He's not even there yet."

Jim Agostine, superintendent of schools in nearby Monroe, said plans were being made for students from Sandy Hook to attend classes in his town this week.

The road ahead for Newtown was clouded with grief.

"I feel like we have to get back to normal, but I don't know if there is normal anymore," said Kim Camputo, mother of two children, ages 5 and 10, who attend a different school. "I'll definitely be dropping them off and picking them up myself for a while."

Also Sunday, a Connecticut official said the gunman's mother was found dead in her pajamas in bed, shot four times in the head with a .22-caliber rifle. The killer then went to the school with guns he took from his mother, broke a window to get inside and began blasting his way through the building.

Federal agents have concluded that Lanza visited an area shooting range, but they do not know whether he actually practiced shooting there.

Ginger Colbrun, a spokeswoman for the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, would not identify the range or say how recently he was there.

Agents also determined that Lanza's mother visited shooting ranges several times, but it's still not clear whether she brought her son to the range or whether he ever fired a weapon there, Colbrun said.

Investigators have offered no motive for the shooting, and police have found no letters or diaries that could shed light on it. They believe Lanza attended Sandy Hook many years ago, but they couldn't explain why he went there Friday.

A law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said investigators are reviewing the contents of Lanza's computer, as well as phone and credit card records in an effort to piece together his activities leading up to the shooting. The official was not authorized to discuss the details of the case.

Newtown police Lt. George Sinko said he "would find it very difficult" for students to return to the same school where they came so close to death.

But, he added, "We want to keep these kids together. They need to support each other."

Jennifer Waters, who at 6 is the same age as many of the dead but attends another school, came to Mass at Saint Rose of Lima Roman Catholic church with lots of questions.

"The little children ? are they with the angels?" she asked her mother.

Joan Waters assured her daughter that they were, then hushed the child as services continued with boxes of tissues placed in each pew and window sill.

An overflow crowd of more than 800 people packed the church where eight children will be buried this week. Lanza and his mother also attended the church. Spokesman Brian Wallace said the diocese has yet to be asked to provide funerals for either.

In his homily, the Rev. Jerald Doyle tried to answer the question of how parishioners could find joy in a holiday season with so much sorrow.

"You won't remember what I say, and it will become unimportant," he said. "But you will really hear deep down that word that will finally and ultimately bring peace and joy. That is the word by which we live. That is the word by which we hope. That is the word by which we love."

At a later Mass at St. Rose of Lima, the priest stopped midway through the service and told worshippers to leave, because someone had phoned in a threat. Police searched the church and the rectory but found nothing dangerous.

The rifle used in Friday's attack was a Bushmaster .223-caliber, a civilian version of the military's M-16 and a model commonly seen at marksmanship competitions. It's similar to the weapon used in the 2002 sniper killings in the Washington, D.C., area and in a recent shopping mall shooting in Oregon.

Versions of the AR-15 were outlawed in the United States under the 1994 assault weapons ban. That law expired in 2004, and Congress, in a nod to the political clout of the gun-rights lobby, did not renew it.

Authorities said Lanza had no criminal history, and it was not clear whether he had a job.

At least one law enforcement official has said Lanza had been diagnosed with Asperger's, a mild form of autism often characterized by social awkwardness.

People with the disorder are often highly intelligent. While they can become frustrated more easily, there is no evidence of a link between Asperger's and violent behavior, experts say.

Libya Congress declares south closed military zone

TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) ? Four policemen were shot dead in Libya's troubled eastern city of Benghazi on Sunday when gunmen fired rocket-propelled grenades on a security compound there, according to the Interior Ministry.

Police spokesman Ezzedine al-Fazani said that the attack was linked to the recent detention of a man allegedly involved in last month's assassination of the head of one of the city's security agencies, National Security chief Col. Farag el-Dersi.

The unknown assailants attacked the security compound, in an apparent attempt to break into a nearby detention center where the suspect in el-Dersi's killing is being held.

In Benghazi, where the revolt that unseated longtime ruler Moammar Gadhafi began last year, security has sharply deteriorated over the past year. An attack in September on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi killed U.S. ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens and three other Americans.

Security in the country's south is also of concern.

Libya's parliament on Sunday voted to close the country's borders with Sudan, Niger and Chad, declaring the south a restricted military area.

The decision affects cities such as Kufra and Sabha, which have been the scene of armed clashes this year that have left more than 100 dead. The fighting has been mainly between the African tribe of Tabu and their rivals, the Arab tribe of Zwia.

General National Congress spokesman Omar Humidan says the parliament voted to seal Libya's southern borders with its African neighbors to stem the flow of illegal immigration and population changes.

The African Tabu, the original inhabitants of south Libya, were heavily suppressed under the Gadhafi regime. They accuse the new government of continued discrimination.

The GNC did not specify how long border crossings would be sealed or how Libya's military plans to secure the long and porous border. The military does not have a strong presence along the southern border and is struggling to rebuild itself ? relying heavily on former rebels as part of its force ? after last year's civil war that ousted Gadhafi.

A military official, who wished to remain anonymous because he was not authorized to speak to reporters, said the government's main concern is not the influx of people, but the illegal flow of weapons.

A flood of weapons, including explosive warheads and small arms ammunition, have been smuggled from Libya to Egypt since the outbreak of revolutions in both countries last year. The weapons have fallen into the hands of Islamist militants in the Sinai Peninsula, or pass through smuggling tunnels to the Palestinian Gaza Strip.

The U.S. State Department said last week that it provided funding to U.S. Customs and Border Protection to conduct training last week in McAllen, Texas for 13 officials from the Libyan Ministry of Defense and the Customs Authority.

The State Department statement said the program specifically focuses on reducing the illicit transfers of weapons across borders. It is the third course undertaken by the State Department and Homeland Security with the Libyan government to improve border security.

Another month has come and gone and it feels like the Memphis real estate market continues to heat up on multiple fronts.? Their are definitely conflicting numbers being released by different groups all wanting to paint the real estate picture in Memphis a certain way.? Home sales are up and sale prices are up.? But, foreclosures and short sales are also up and while it appears homes are selling for slightly higher prices, the pace is still way off from what a normal housing market looks like.

As far as investment real estate goes though, the rental property picture at Premier Property Management continues to soar.? Nate Gray and his team at Premier Property Management have done an excellent job and they had another incredible month.? Here are the charts and numbers which we find most relevant and I will share one more number not found in the charts.? As we continue to grow and add management services for investors from all over the country and even the world, we are challenged with a tremendous responsibility.? We are managing close to $150 million in investment property value for investors and process millions of dollars in payments to investors every month.?

We are preparing to invite a very prestigious? and no-nonsense accounting firm to audit our process and help us improve and secure our methods for collecting, tracking, transferring and accounting for every investor and their rental payments.? One thing that our company has excelled at as we have grown is improving how we conduct our business.? We have improved processes in every department of our company and will be sharing many of those improvements here on our blog in the very near future.? Total Properties

Premier property management continues to grow at a very steady pace and the team is growing as well.? Premier Property Management hired two new employees in the past 30 days to assist with the growth and Premier Property Management of Texas hired one new employee as well.? These numbers reflect Memphis properties only and beginning in January we will be releasing numbers for both Memphis and Dallas.? As of today, Dallas has eclipsed 54 properties and when combined with Memphis, the two companies are managing over 1500 properties.? After November, the total number of investors we are currently working with is 565.

Our Happy Meter!

Last month I reported on a number that we will beginning releasing a chart for in January of 2013.? That number is, how many sales go to existing clients each month?? For us, this is our signal to how well we are performing both in service and in return.? gauging happiness is a tricky thing for a company and many companies can convince themselves they are making clients happy in lots of ways.? For us, we call every client - every month and the tone of those conversations always keeps us in the know if there are problems or concerns.? On the other hand, we can track purchases from existing clients and use it to gauge their satisfaction with our company.? As long as existing investors continue to ASK for the opportunity to purchase additional properties, then I would say we are providing exactly what our clients want.? In November, 59% of the investors purchasing rental properties were existing clients.? 20 of the 34 investors who purchased in November were existing clients.? All 34 clients combined to purchase 40 homes in November. ? I would say we are hitting the Happiness goal!

2-Year Leases & Rent Increases

This next graph shows how many properties were rented each month this year.? It also shows how many of those properties were leased for 2 years and how many of those properties were leased above our internal zip-code rental average.? Our data comes straight from the actual rental contracts in our portfolio, so we pay very close attention to our trends and not so much to what a .com website says about trends.? This graph shows incredibly positive trends and those trends have as much to do with the quality of property renovations as it does the actual management company.??

Be on the lookout for a new chart in January showing the number of permits pulled by property renovations each month.? It seems some bystanders with no knowledge of our company have been questioning our renovations.? To date in 2012, we have had over 400 permits pulled on work that requires permits in our properties.? Those permits have been for everything from electrical to mechanical to plumbing and general construction.? In November, we went over 400 permits pulled on the properties we have renovated in 2012 and will begin to show those numbers monthly.? The higher level of work and the higher level of detail on each rental property definitely contribute to our ability to rent properties above zip code averages and fro 2-year contracts.

This last chart shows our vacancy rate as measured on the first Tuesday of each month.? ON the first Tuesday in December, our vacancy rate measured 6.33% which is reflected in the report.? However, I am extremely excited to see how the month ends.? There has been an abundance of activity here before Christmas and the vacancy rate on Thursday was measured at 5.85% with only 86 vacancies out of 1470 properties.? That 86 properties includes every new property that was renovated in November.? Curently there were only 8 properties that had been vacant for longer than 30 days which is our red line. ? That lower vacancy rate entering into the new year should make for an improved performance for the entire portfolio under management as we start 2013.? We'll keep our eye on it!

Simply being aware of these numbers and constantly working to improve and measure improvement, are essential actions that have to take place at a quality company.? Move For Hunger ? Move For Hunger in Morristown Patch

Many of us have moved at least once in our lives. Some have moved, and dealt with the headaches of moving, more times than we?d care to remember.

Amidst that trial, it?s easy to barrel ahead toward the goal as fast as possible. Something like that leftover food in the fridge, in the cupboard, isn?t really that important?you?ll restock when you settle into your new place.

But, like snow, that adds up. One flake is imperceptible. Many, and you?ve got a blizzard.

When Adam Lowy founded?Move for Hunger?in Neptune three years ago, he saw how much food was being wasted, food that could be saved for those who need it. And?Lowy?s Moving Service?his family?s business, which has operated in the Monmouth County area for about 90 years?could serve as the go-between.

At Tuesday night?s Town Council meeting, Lowy formally introduced a partnership between his organization and Morristown, which is ?adopting? Move for Hunger.

?It?s the first town in the nation,? said Lowy who, after three years, has developed relationships with about 600 food ?relocation partners? in 44 states. ?Hopefully, this is something we will be able to replicate nationwide.?

During his presentation, Lowy outlined how Move for Hunger works. ?People throw out tons of stuff. Now, we?re going to pick up that food and bring it to our food banks,? he said.?

The connection was made when Adam?s brother Max, Move for Hunger?s real estate program director, made contact with Mayor Tim Dougherty?s wife Mary, who also works in real estate through a?New Jersey Relocation Council?event.

?They talked about projects that can make the town better,? Adam Lowy said. ?She was incredibly enthusiastic. We did a lot of research and heard a lot of great things about Morristown. It made sense to launch here.?

Move for Hunger collaborated in August with East Hanover-based College Hunks Hauling Junk, as well,?for a benefit concert held on the Green.

Currently in its infancy, Mary Dougherty said Move for Hunger?s Morristown collaboration already was picking up food that can then be dropped off at local food banks.

However, she said she expected everyone involved to get back together after the holidays to set up specific drop-off locations in town in order to make the giving that much easier. Information, such as site locations, was expected to be on both the Move for Hunger and?Town of Morristown?websites as it becomes available.

?It?s the beginning of hopefully a very long partnership,? Tim Dougherty said. ?I hope a lot of other towns sign up for this.?

At the conclusion of?a brief video?which was viewed at?the NBC American Giving Awards, where Move for Hunger received a $125,000 grant for its work?Lowy notes the organization had collected over 360,000 pounds of food since they began. And, that number has only gone up since the video was made almost a year ago.?To date,?Move for Hunger has collected over 843,000 pounds of food.

?This is something that can be done every single day,? he said. ?Let?s do something powerful together.?

Car bomb kills two in Somali capital

MOGADISHU (Reuters) - A suicide car bomber killed two people in the centre of Somalia's capital Mogadishu capital on Friday in a blast that appeared to target an African Union peacekeepers' convoy, police and residents said.

Security in Mogadishu has improved greatly since Islamist rebels allied to al Qaeda fled the capital more than a year ago, but the coastal city remains dogged by bombings and assassinations blamed on the militants.

The bomber struck on the Maka al-Mukaram road, a thoroughfare lined by construction sites and tea-rooms that last year was a frontline in the battle for control of Mogadishu.

"An AMISOM armored convoy passed us and just after we heard a loud explosion. We looked back and saw thick smoke," Samira Hussein, who was travelling down the road in a minibus taxi, told Reuters at the blast site where the twisted wreckage of the car smoldered.

The blast killed the bomber and two civilians and wounded seven others, Abdifatah Sabriye, a senior police commander in Mogadishu's Waberi district, told Reuters.

The al Shabaab rebel group claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was targeting the United States' head of counter terrorism in east Africa.

The group said on its Twitter feed (@HSMPress) that the official was injured as he was being driven to the presidential palace in a convoy of three armored vehicles.

American diplomats in Nairobi were not immediately available for comment.

Locals said the street, which links the commercial K4 district with parliament, was quieter than usual as the blast happened during Friday prayers.

In late September, al Shabaab withdrew from the southern port of Kismayu, their last major urban stronghold, a retreat that signaled their demise as a quasi-conventional military force. The rebels vowed to step up a campaign of suicide bombings and hit-and-run attacks.

See more photos ? The trouble with motorcycles, as anyone who has ever suffered road rash will tell you, is that falling off is actually rather painful.

You have to try much harder to fall off a car, but those aren't without issues either--they're rather heavy, and that makes them relatively inefficient.

The Lit Motors C-1 seems to fix both those issues in one vehicle, combining the comfort and topple-resistance of a car, with the excitement and efficiency of a motorcycle.

And it's really, really cool.

Staying upright

You'll notice at first that the C-1 has only two wheels. It also has enclosed doors, so you won't be putting your feet down every time you stop.

In a motorcycle, you'd quickly fall over. Falling over when you aren't even moving, as any biker will tell you, is dumb.

To stop you looking dumb, the C-1 uses gyroscopic stabilization. Two gycroscopes mounted low in the chassis keep the vehicle upright, even when standing still.

Together, they provide 1,000 pounds of gyroscopic torque. For some perspective, that's some serious stability--and Lit has demonstrated this by trying to push it over. It won't budge. How about tying a Jeep to the C-1 and trying to drag it over? Nope, that doesn't work either.

"You'd need a baby elephant to knock over our vehicle," says Lit founder Daniel Kim. So unlike a traditional motorcycle, you won't be falling off it. Unless you find yourself in an elephant enclosure at your nearest zoo. It does have "landing gear" which extends when you park, but while the vehicle is on you're going to stay fairly upright.

Lit has released some basic specifications, too.

Top speed is said to be over 100 mph, 0-60 mph can be reached in under 6 seconds, and the company quotes a range of 200 miles on an 8 kilowatt-hour battery pack. The whole vehicle weighs only 800 lbs and looks fairly aerodynamic, which explains both the performance and the range.

Can I buy one?

At the moment, the Lit C-1 is only a prototype, but the company expects production versions to be on the road by 2014.

It's also taking deposits from interested parties. The initial production run is expected to cost around $24,000 each, or around $19,000 after tax incentives.

That's a lot for a tiny electric vehicle, but understandable from a small company making a high-technology product. If it goes into full-scale production, the price could drop as low as $12,500 before incentives.

As for the uninspiring name, that's likely to change--Lit says it's simply a development code.
