Xbox One Instant Switching Turns The Console Into A Voice ...

Now leading the pack in gaming consoles, Microsoft?s future growth lies outside the gaming sphere. We?ll surely see tons of games at E3 in a few weeks, but at the big reveal of the Xbox One, the company chose to focus on non-gaming features, such as media streaming and Skype conversations.

But what makes streaming and entertainment a true upgrade on the Xbox One, which already has access to almost all streaming platforms? Instant Switching. It allows you to switch between inputs, games, menus, internet explorer, and almost anything else almost instantly. And what?s more, it lets you layer the power of Microsoft partnerships and information across live TV.

The Xbox responds to the voice; saying ?Xbox On? turns on the console to the homescreen. The UI is familiar, and lets you see what you were doing last, along with trending content from friends, and other panels like games, tv, etc. But then you say ?Xbox watch TV?, and live TV pops on. ?Xbox show Guide?, and the guide pops up letting you see what?s available on Live TV. ?Xbox watch ESPN?, and bloop, ESPN is on. Instant Switching at its best.

And here?s where it gets interesting:

?Xbox show Fantasy,? and instantly, along the right side of the screen showing a Knicks vs Celtics game you?ll see a run-down on your fantasy league, letting you access further information and even make alterations in real-time, right alongside the game itself.

The company also announced a new partnership with NFL which will offer exclusive content and access to Fantasy leagues in Snapmode in real-time.

This is thanks to a feature called Snapmode, which will offer new interactive experiences for Live TV. This includes social, applications, and more.

Because Xbox is now tapping into your live TV, it offers a more targeted and complete entertainment UI, with favorites showing all of your favorite content in a single destination.

And it?s all powered by your voice, should you like. What?s that? Is that the voice of Microsoft telling the hundreds of thousands of Xbox 360 owners out there, who proudly revel in their ownership of what?s considered the most popular gaming console out there, that they should maybe think about upgrading?

Of course, Microsoft wouldn?t upgrade software without hardware (which you can read more about here), and that includes the addition of a Blu-ray player.

Alongside announcing the Xbox One, Microsoft also announced a partnership with 343 Industries and Steven Spielberg to develop a live action TV show about Halo. They didn?t go into much detail, but how much you want to bet there?s some awesome Snapmode features and Xbox SmartGlass features?

Student Opinion | Should Marijuana Be Legal? - NYTimes.com

Eighteen states have legalized marijuana for medical use. Should it be legal for medical use all over the United States? Should it also be legal for recreational use for consumers who are 21 and over, as Washington and Colorado have allowed? In general, do you think the current federal prohibition on marijuana is good public policy or not? Why?

In ?Americas Coalition Puts Marijuana Legalization Up for Discussion,? Randal C. Archibold writes about the Organization of American States?s suggestion that countries consider making marijuana legal as a possible way to ?reassess how the drug war is carried out.?

A comprehensive report on drug policy in the Americas released Friday by a consortium of nations suggests that the legalization of marijuana, but not other illicit drugs, be considered among a range of ideas to reassess how the drug war is carried out.

The report, released by the Organization of American States, walked a careful line in not recommending any single approach to the drug problem and encouraging ?flexibility.?

Prompted by President Juan Manuel Santos of Colombia at the Summit of the Americas last year to answer growing dissatisfaction and calls for new strategies in the drug war, the report?s 400 pages mainly summarize and distill previous research and debate on the subject.

But the fact that it gave weight to exploring legalizing or de-penalizing marijuana was seized on by advocates of more liberal drug use laws as a landmark and a potential catalyst for less restrictive laws in a number of countries.

?This takes the debate to a whole other level,? said Ethan Nadelmann, executive director of the Drug Policy Alliance, which advocates more liberal drug use laws. ?It effectively breaks the taboo on considering alternatives to the current prohibitionist approach.?

Students: Tell us ?

  • Do you think the current federal prohibition on marijuana is good public policy? Why?
  • Should marijuana be legalized for medical use, as 18 states have done already? Should it be made legal for recreational use for consumers 21 and over, as Washington and Colorado have done?
  • What do you think might be the dangers of legalization? Do you think it will increase the number of people abusing drugs? Will it lead to more traffic accidents or unproductive workers? Will it lower educational achievement or deepen family problems? Will it lead to more teenagers using drugs?
  • What do you think might be the benefits of legalization? Do you think it will reduce drug violence, or keep more nonviolent people out of prison? Will it expand individuals? rights and allow the government to regulate marijuana, as it does alcohol and tobacco? Will it increase tax revenue?
  • What do you think a legal marketplace for marijuana might look like? Would marijuana be sold everywhere cigarettes are, or would there be special stores? Would marijuana be advertised as tobacco is?

Head of embattled G4S security force retires

LONDON (AP) ? The chief executive of security firm G4S is to retire after a tumultuous year that saw the company fail to fulfill its Olympic contract.

The company said Tuesday that Nick Buckles will be replaced by Ashley Almanza, a senior executive from the oil and gas company BG Group.

G4S had agreed in February to take an 85 million pound hit after failing to provide agreed upon security personnel for last summer's London Olympics.

That figure includes extra costs paid by the government to provide military and police security to cover the G4S shortfall.

Despite the setback, the company has been hired in a support role to help secure the G-8 summit of world leaders in Northern Ireland next month.

The new CEO is scheduled to take over on June 1.

EAST LANSING, Mich. Turns out, that old "practice makes perfect" adage may be overblown.

New research led by Michigan State University's Zach Hambrick finds that a copious amount of practice is not enough to explain why people differ in level of skill in two widely studied activities, chess and music.

In other words, it takes more than hard work to become an expert. Hambrick, writing in the research journal Intelligence, said natural talent and other factors likely play a role in mastering a complicated activity.

"Practice is indeed important to reach an elite level of performance, but this paper makes an overwhelming case that it isn't enough," said Hambrick, associate professor of psychology.

The debate over why and how people become experts has existed for more than a century. Many theorists argue that thousands of hours of focused, deliberate practice is sufficient to achieve elite status.

Hambrick disagrees.

"The evidence is quite clear," he writes, "that some people do reach an elite level of performance without copious practice, while other people fail to do so despite copious practice."

Hambrick and colleagues analyzed 14 studies of chess players and musicians, looking specifically at how practice was related to differences in performance. Practice, they found, accounted for only about one-third of the differences in skill in both music and chess.

So what made up the rest of the difference?

Based on existing research, Hambrick said it could be explained by factors such as intelligence or innate ability, and the age at which people start the particular activity. A previous study of Hambrick's suggested that working memory capacity which is closely related to general intelligence may sometimes be the deciding factor between being good and great.

While the conclusion that practice may not make perfect runs counter to the popular view that just about anyone can achieve greatness if they work hard enough, Hambrick said there is a "silver lining" to the research.

"If people are given an accurate assessment of their abilities and the likelihood of achieving certain goals given those abilities," he said, "they may gravitate toward domains in which they have a realistic chance of becoming an expert through deliberate practice."

Comet ISON: How to See Potential 'Comet of the Century' Online Today

The much-anticipated incoming Comet ISON, which some scientists hope will become the "comet of the century" later this year, may not be visible to the naked eye yet, but you don't have to wait months to see this icy wanderer. The comet takes center stage in an online telescope webcast today (May 19).

Comet ISON was first discovered last year and is currently expected to swing extremely close by the sun in late November, when it will be at its best and brightest of the year. In anticipation of the comet's arrival, the online Slooh Space Camera will offer live telescope views of the object beginning at 4:45 p.m. EDT (2045 GMT).

You can watch the Comet ISON webcast live on SPACE.com, courtesy of Slooh Space Camera. [See the more amazing photos of Comet ISON]

Today's webcast marks Slooh's fourth monthly webcast dedicated to tracking Comet ISON's progress through the solar system. During today's 30-minute live show, Slooh officials will provide views of Comet ISON from the firm's remotely operated telescopes in the Canary Islands, off the west coast of Africa.

Senior space scientist Padma Yanamandra-Fisher of the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colo., will join Slooh producer Paul Cox in the comet webcast. Yanamandra-Fisher is helping coordinate NASA's Comet ISON Observing Campaign to track the comet. The international campaign is bringing together scientists around the world to plan out observations of ISON.

NASA has already used several spacecraft, including sun-watching Stereo probes and the Hubble Space Telescope, to observe ISON. An unmanned balloon mission is also among the expeditions planned to observe ISON.

Comet ISON has drawn worldwide attention from stargazers and scientists, including NASA, because of its close approach to the sun on Nov. 28, when it will be just 730,000 miles (1.2 million kilometers) from the sun. During that close encounter with the sun, Comet ISON could become one of the brightest comets in decades. However, the comet could also fizzle out.

Comet ISON was discovered in September 2012 by Russian amateur astronomers Artyom Novichonok and Vitali Nevski using the International Scientific Optical Network (ISON) of remotely operated telescopes. The comet is officially known by the identification C/2012 S1 (ISON).

On April 10, scientists used the Hubble Space Telescope to observe Comet ISON. At the time it was about 386 million miles (621 million kilometers) from the sun and 394 million miles (634 million kilometers) from Earth.

When observed by Hubble, the comet's nucleus was about 3 miles (5 km) across and a dusty tail that stretches more than 57,000 miles (92,000 km) long.

Mice return from a month in space

MOSCOW (AP) ? A Russian capsule carrying mice, lizards and other small animals returned to Earth on Sunday after spending a month in space for what scientists said was the longest experiment of its kind.

Fewer than half of the 53 mice and other rodents who blasted off on April 19 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome survived the flight, Russian news agencies reported, quoting Vladimir Sychov, deputy director of the Institute of Medical and Biological Problems and the lead researcher.

Sychov said this was to be expected and the surviving mice were sufficient to complete the study, which was designed to show the effects of weightlessness and other factors of space flight on cell structure. All 15 of the lizards survived, he said. The capsule also carried small crayfish and fish.

The capsule's orbit reached 575 kilometers (345 miles) above Earth, according to the news agencies, which said this was far higher than the orbit of the International Space Station.

Russian state television showed the round Bion-M capsule and some of the surviving mice after it landed slightly off course but safely in a planted field near Orenburg, about 1,200 kilometers (750 miles) southeast of Moscow.

"This is the first time that animals have flown in space for so long on their own," Sychov said in the television broadcast from the landing site. The last research craft to carry animals into space spent 12 days in orbit in 2007.

The mice and other animals were to be flown back to Moscow to undergo a series of tests at Sychov's institute, which is part of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Saudi vegetable seller dies from self-immolation

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) ? A Saudi newspaper says a vegetable seller who set himself on fire in Riyadh after police confiscated his goods for standing in an unauthorized area has died.

The website for newspaper Sada reported that the man, identified only by the family name of Sureihi, died in hospital late on Friday.

The self-immolation emulated that of a street vendor in Tunisia, whose 2011 death sparked the Arab Spring uprisings.

Family members were seen outside the hospital Saturday demanding answers about why police confiscated the man's goods. Witnesses say the family wants to know what led him to douse himself in gasoline and set himself ablaze on Thursday.

Saudi officials refused to comment. They did not disclose the man's name or age.

Despite Saudi Arabia's oil wealth, many of its people live in poor conditions. Protests in the conservative kingdom are rare.

Germany's Merkel visits Pope, urges tougher market controls

By James Mackenzie

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel met Pope Francis on Saturday and, apparently responding to his criticism of a heartless "dictatorship of the economy", called for stronger regulation of financial markets.

On Thursday, Francis appealed in a speech for world financial reform, saying the global economic crisis had made life worse for millions in rich and poor countries.

Merkel visited Rome for a few hours specifically to meet the pontiff and spoke with him privately in his library for 45 minutes, unusually long for a private papal audience.

She told reporters afterwards that the scandals and excesses criticized by Francis earlier in the week showed that vital checks and balances had not been functioning properly.

"Crises have blown up because the rules of the social market have not been observed," she said, adding that tightening financial market regulation would be a main objective of the meeting of leaders of Group of 20 economic powers in September.

"We have made progress but we are nowhere near a point where we could say that the kind of derailment that leads to market crises could not happen again and so the issue will again play a central role at the G20 meeting this year," she said.

"It is true that economies are there to serve people and that has by no means always been the case in recent years."

Merkel, the daughter of a Lutheran minister, said she and Francis had spoken mainly about globalization, the European Union and the role of Europe in the world.

"Pope Francis made it clear that we need a strong, fair Europe and I found the message very encouraging," said Merkel, head of the Christian Democratic Union, which has a strong Catholic component.

In his first major speech about finance since his election in March, Francis had also urged states to take greater control of their economies and protect the weakest.

Merkel, who grew up in communist East Germany before the country was re-unified, said both she and Francis had "lived under dictatorships", referring to the military junta that ruled the pope's native Argentina from 1976 to 1983.

Merkel gave Francis, who lived briefly in Germany when he was a Jesuit priest, three volumes of poetry by Friedrich H?lderlin and 107 CDs of music by German conductor and composer Wilhelm Furtwaengler.

"I don't know if you will have the time to listen to all of them," she joked as she gave him the music.

2 fires north of LA persist after long fire week

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (AP) ? A pair of tamed but persistent wildfires still burned in the hills and mountains around Interstate 5 after a wild week of burning brush in the area north of Los Angeles.

A new fire that broke out Friday, the third major blaze in the area in a week, quickly surged to more than 500 acres, briefly threatened an elementary school and led to the temporary evacuation of about 20 homes.

The fire burned very close to I-5 during some of the busiest hours of the week for the heavily traveled route in and out of Los Angeles, but some 350 firefighters were able to get the edge on the blaze as quickly as it arose.

The fire was 60 percent contained by nightfall and residents who evacuated were told they could safely return, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.

Crews were helped by relatively mild temperatures that were expected to remain into the weekend, but challenged by unpredictable winds and very difficult terrain.

With air and ground attacks, firefighters were able to douse the flames closest to Northlake Hills Elementary School and stop a looming threat.

The school had a large defensible space around it, so it was easy to protect, Los Angeles County Fire Inspector Scott Miller said.

The campus was put on lockdown and buses were put on standby for a time in case hundreds of kindergarten through fifth-grade students needed to be evacuated.

After the flames were redirected, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Sgt. Brian Allen said the students were released to their parents without incident.

The fire was moving toward Castaic Lake.

The earlier fire that broke out Wednesday near Frazier Park was 55 percent contained Friday after consuming some 4,300 acres.

That blaze was not threatening any homes or buildings but fire officials said containing it would be a long, difficult task because it was burning in such rugged and hard-to-reach terrain.

Movie review: 'Angels' Share' | The Salt Lake Tribune

"The Angels' Share" ? Outcasts -- from left, Mo (Jasmin Riggins), Rhino (William Ruane), Robbie (Paul Brannigan) and Albert (Gary Maitland) -- get involve in the whisky business in this comedy-drama. Joss Barratt | Sundance Selects

The caper comedy "The Angels? Share" may be the closest Ken Loach, the rabidly left-wing British filmmaker, has ever gotten to a mainstream Hollywood movie ? and that?s a good thing and a bad thing.

The setup is pure Loach, as it depicts the squalid life of Robbie (Paul Brannigan), a poor Glasgow lad dealing with his latest scrape with the law and avoiding prison only because his girlfriend, Leonie (Siobhan Reilly), is about to give birth. Robbie looks destined for an early grave, beaten up either by Leonie?s angry uncles or by a local rival and his mates. The only person on his side is Harry (John Henshaw), who supervises the lad?s community service.

When Harry leads a field trip to a local whiskey distillery, Robbie discovers he has a nose for picking out fine liquors. Robbie also learns that a rare cask of whiskey is going up for auction, so he devises a plot to steal some of the golden liquid with the help of his fellow parolees.

That?s where Loach and screenwriter Paul Laverty (who?s collaborated with Loach on several films, including "My Name Is Joe" and "The Wind That Shakes the Barley") shift into light comic farce, in the mode of the old Ealing Studios comedies (e.g. "The Ladykillers").

Loach even resorts to using the most overused Scottish song of the past 20 years, The Proclaimers? "I?m Gonna Be (500 Miles)," an indication of how far out of his comfort zone he is. Even so, the story is loaded with droll humor, authentic touches of working-class life, and a sharp cast.

Minnesota Redefines Marriage Despite Religious-Freedom Warnings

National Organization for Marriage rally against same-sex 'marriage' July 28, 2010, in St. Paul, Minn.

? Fibonacci Blue via Flickr.com (CC BY 2.0)

ST. PAUL, Minn.? The state of Minnesota has redefined marriage to include same-sex couples, despite concerns over social well-being and religious liberty raised by Catholics and other faith leaders.?

A statement from the Minnesota Catholic Conference said that the bill?s passage, ?though expected, is no less disappointing.?

?The full social and legal effects of marriage redefinition will begin to manifest themselves in the years ahead,? the conference cautioned.

?The Church, for its part, will continue to work to rebuild a healthy culture of marriage and family life, as well as defend the rights of Minnesotans to live out their faith in everyday life and speak the truth in love.?

The Minnesota Senate passed a measure to redefine marriage by a 37-30 vote on May 13, following a 75-59 vote of approval by the state House of Representatives last week.

Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton signed the bill into law on May 14, making Minnesota the 12th state to change the legal definition of marriage to include same-sex couples.

In a previous statement on the legislation, the Minnesota Catholic Conference warned that it would ?set in motion a transformation of Minnesota law that will focus on accommodating the desires of adults instead of protecting the best interest of children.?

The bill amounts to ?an injustice that tears at the fabric of society,? the conference said, and it ?poses a serious threat to the religious liberty and conscience rights of Minnesotans.?

While the new law includes some provisions to protect the conscience rights of clergy and religious organizations, the conference noted that it fails to ?protect the people in the pew ? individuals, non-religious nonprofits and small business owners who maintain the time-honored belief that marriage is a union of one man and one woman.?

Pointing to legal experts both for and against a redefinition of marriage, the Minnesota Catholic Conference asserted that this failure will result in numerous lawsuits and complaints in court.

Leaders of other faiths had also voiced their concerns over the bill. In an April letter to the state Legislature, a group of pastors, rabbis, imams and other religious figures emphasized the stability that marriage offers families and societies.

Redefining marriage, they warned, ?degrades the cultural understanding of marriage to an emotional bond between any two adults, and creates a profound interference with the exercise of religious freedom for people and institutions whose faith and doctrine recognize the spiritual foundation of marriage exclusively as a union between a man and a woman.?

The faith leaders also cautioned that ?if marriage is redefined in civil law, religious individuals and other organizations ? regardless of the foundational tenants of their faith ? will be required to consider same-sex unions as the equivalent of marriage in their lives, ministries and operations.?

?An imposition of this nature is a violation of conscience and of religious liberty,? they said.

During the debate that preceded the passage of the new law, Bishop Paul Sirba of Duluth stressed the need to continue in charitable defense of truth.

The bishop said that ?this debate has often been used as an occasion to sow mistrust and doubt, as if followers of the God who is love, and whose love for all people we proclaim each day as the body of Christ, are acting, instead, out of some sort of ill will.?

In a statement published before the Senate vote, he said that he is ?particularly mindful of our brothers and sisters who have same-sex attractions,? emphasizing that all the faithful must offer them ?unconditional love and respect.??

At the same time, he said, ?we unconditionally reaffirm our understanding of marriage.?

?For Catholic Christians, the call now is to be even stronger witnesses to the Good News about marriage, both when it is popular and when it is not.?

Political motivations may have evolutionary links to physical strength

May 15, 2013 ? Men's upper-body strength predicts their political opinions on economic redistribution, according to new research published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

The principal investigators of the research -- psychological scientists Michael Bang Petersen of Aarhus University, Denmark and Daniel Sznycer of University of California, Santa Barbara -- believe that the link may reflect psychological traits that evolved in response to our early ancestral environments and continue to influence behavior today.

"While many think of politics as a modern phenomenon, it has -- in a sense -- always been with our species," says Petersen.

In the days of our early ancestors, decisions about the distribution of resources weren't made in courthouses or legislative offices, but through shows of strength. With this in mind, Petersen, Sznycer and colleagues hypothesized that upper-body strength -- a proxy for the ability to physically defend or acquire resources -- would predict men's opinions about the redistribution of wealth.

The researchers collected data on bicep size, socioeconomic status, and support for economic redistribution from hundreds of people in the United States, Argentina, and Denmark.

In line with their hypotheses, the data revealed that wealthy men with high upper-body strength were less likely to support redistribution, while less wealthy men of the same strength were more likely to support it.

"Despite the fact that the United States, Denmark and Argentina have very different welfare systems, we still see that -- at the psychological level -- individuals reason about welfare redistribution in the same way," says Petersen. "In all three countries, physically strong males consistently pursue the self-interested position on redistribution."

Men with low upper-body strength, on the other hand, were less likely to support their own self-interest. Wealthy men of this group showed less resistance to redistribution, while poor men showed less support.

"Our results demonstrate that physically weak males are more reluctant than physically strong males to assert their self-interest -- just as if disputes over national policies were a matter of direct physical confrontation among small numbers of individuals, rather than abstract electoral dynamics among millions," says Petersen.

Interestingly, the researchers found no link between upper-body strength and redistribution opinions among women. Petersen argues that this is likely due to the fact that, over the course of evolutionary history, women had less to gain, and also more to lose, from engaging in direct physical aggression.

Together, the results indicate that an evolutionary perspective may help to illuminate political motivations, at least those of men.

"Many previous studies have shown that people's political views cannot be predicted by standard economic models," Petersen explains. "This is among the first studies to show that political views may be rational in another sense, in that they're designed by natural selection to function in the conditions recurrent over human evolutionary history."

Co-authors on this research include Aaron Sell, Leda Cosmides, and John Tooby of the University of California, Santa Barbara.

This research was supported by a grant from the Danish Research Council and a Director's Pioneer Award from the National Institutes of Health.

House panel set to OK cut in food stamp program

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A House committee rebuffed Democratic efforts Wednesday to keep the $80 billion-a-year food stamp program whole, as debate on the farm bill turned into a theological discourse on helping the poor.

The House bill would cut about $2.5 billion a year ? or a little more than 3 percent ? from the food stamp program, which is used by 1 in 7 Americans.

The committee rejected an amendment by Democrats to strike the cuts 27-17, keeping them in the bill.

The legislation would achieve the cuts partly by eliminating an eligibility category that mandates automatic food stamp benefits when people sign up for certain other programs. It would also save dollars by targeting states that give people who don't have heating bills very small amounts of heating assistance so they can automatically qualify for higher food stamp benefits.

Republicans argued that the cut is small relative to the size of the program, now known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, and that people who qualify for the aid could still sign up for it, they just wouldn't be automatically enrolled. They defended the cuts after Rep. Juan Vargas, D-Calif., quoted the Book of Matthew in opposing them: "When I was hungry you gave me food. When I was thirsty, you gave me drink."

Several Republicans talked about their Christianity and said the Bible encourages people to help each other but doesn't dictate what the federal government should do. "We should be doing this as individuals, helping the poor," said Rep. Doug LaMalfa, R-Calif.

Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Mass., offered the amendment to do away with the cuts. He said taking the hunger assistance away from people will just make the poor "more vulnerable and more miserable."

"Christians, Jews, Muslims, whatever ? we're failing our brothers and sisters here," McGovern said.

The cuts are part of massive legislation that costs almost $100 billion annually over five years and would set policy for farm subsidies, rural programs and the food aid. The House panel started work on the legislation Wednesday, one day after the Senate Agriculture Committee approved its version.

Last year more than 47 million people used the SNAP program with the cost more than doubling since 2008. The rolls rose rapidly because of the economic downturn, rising food prices and expanded eligibility under President Barack Obama's 2009 economic stimulus law.

Republicans criticized Obama in last year's presidential campaign for his expansion of the program, and many House conservatives have refused to consider a farm bill without cuts to food stamps, which make up about 80 percent of the bill's cost.

The Senate approved much smaller cuts to the program, about $400 million a year. House Agriculture Committee Chairman Frank Lucas, R-Okla., will have to appease all sides as he tries to push the farm bill through for the third year in a row, balancing calls from House conservatives to cut the program with Senate Democrats who are reluctant to touch it.

"I expect it to come from all directions," Lucas said last week of the food stamp debate.

The House bill would cut around $4 billion a year from food aid and farm spending, while the Senate bill would trim roughly $2.4 billion. Those reductions include more than $600 million in yearly savings from across-the-board cuts that took effect earlier this year.

Much of the savings in the House and Senate bills comes from eliminating annual direct payments, a subsidy frequently criticized because it isn't tied to production or crop prices. Part of that savings would go toward the deficit reduction, but the rest of the money would create new programs and raise subsidies for some crops while business is booming in the agricultural sector.

The Senate bill would eliminate direct payments immediately, while the House bill would phase out payments to cotton farmers, who rely on the program, over the next two years.

Like the Senate bill, the House measure also includes concessions to Southern rice and peanut growers who also depend on direct payments. The bills would lower the threshold for rice and peanut subsidies to kick in when prices drop.

There are protections for other crops as well. Both bills would boost federally subsidized crop insurance and create a new program that covers smaller losses on planted crops before crop insurance kicks in, favoring Midwestern corn and soybean farmers, who use crop insurance most often.

The committee made no changes to the subsidy programs in the bill Wednesday, and Lucas made no apologies for broadening some farm programs.

"Let's give certainty to an industry that has been a bright spot in an otherwise dismal economy," he said as he opened the committee meeting.

The farm bill passed the Senate last year but the House declined to take it up after conservatives in that chamber objected to the cost and insisted on higher cuts to food stamps. This year, the full House will consider the bill.

Asia Financial News Online | A Ezbukz Blog For Financial Help

If you are planning to holiday in Asia with your young family, here are some tips and recommendations to make your Asian holiday that much more enjoyable.

Be it relaxing in heavenly Bali villas, or hiking in Kuta Kinabalu, or enjoying Disney World in Tokyo, Asia offers a huge variety of holiday destinations for those with younger children.

However, as rewarding as it is, traveling with the younger ones in Asia is not always an easy sail.

Here are some insights gained traveling across Asia with children in tow, over the past 10 years.

Getting There and Back

It is more than likely that you will be taking a commercial flight to Asia.

Here is the first word of caution. As far as traveling with the young ones is concerned, not all airlines are created equal. No, I don t mean the level of service you can expect, as this seems to be of quite a high level whichever Asian based major airline you choose. In our experience, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Air New Zealand, and Emirates all offer great service when you are traveling with kids.

However, the big difference comes in how much different carriers choose to charge for the younger ones. Some carriers, for example, charge 10 percent of an adult fare, for infants, traveling on your lap, without a seat. At first, this may sound like a fair deal. However, if you consider the fact that this 10 percent is calculated as a percentage of a -Full Published Adult Fare- price, you may find that you are paying as much for your infant s air fare, as you are for your own discounted fare! The good news is, not all airlines use this pricing policy, and if you shop around, you can save yourself hundreds of dollars even before you leave home!

Also, do keep in mind, that many airlines will offer special -Child Meals-. Some, such as Singapore Airlines, do also offer different menus for different age groups.

Similarly, for toddlers and older kids, it is worth checking what is on offer in terms of flight entertainment. Some airlines will have dedicated children s cartoon channels, with a large selection of entertainment options, whilst others may not. If you are traveling long-haul, this alone could make a huge difference to how well your Asian holiday kicks off.

Transportation on the Ground

The quality and safety of ground transportation varies immensely from one Asian Country to the other. However, as a general rule of thumb, do not expect taxis to provide child safety seats, and in many parts of Asia, even rental cars may not have the child safety seat option.

The good news is, across most of Asia, metered taxis are plentiful, and relatively well maintained, with working seat belts. When you are in Singapore, you can expect (or even demand); fully functioning seat belts both at the front and back passenger seats. In other parts of the region, you may find that seat belts have been removed, on purpose, because they get in the way .

So, if you are adamant that you would like child safety seats whilst holidaying in Asia, you may consider bringing your own, or picking one up, when you land at your destination.

Probably with the exception of Japan, Korea and Taiwan, facilities on local train services are of a variable quality, and unless you are going for gold, and staying on the Palace on Wheels in India, or a special First Class trip between Beijing and Shanghai, you may want to plan well, and take all your essentials on board with you.

Food Matters

Whilst most westerners find Asian food (especially South Asian, or South East Asian food), quite spicy, this is not necessarily an issue when traveling with the younger ones. Most hotels and restaurants will prepare food for the little ones separately, without the spices. Also, if in doubt, plain noodles, or plain rice with some vegetables on the side is always readily available as a good stop gap ration. Depending on how off the beaten track you decide to travel, you are more than likely to find, old favourites such as fish-fingers, chicken nuggets, and hamburgers in most parts of Asia.

One word of caution on the food front is the liberal use of MSG (Mono Sodium Glutamate) in Asian cooking. This food additive is also used in the west (mostly packaged crisps/chips), and in principle is no more harmful than many of the E numbers we may consume daily. However, in many Asian countries MSG is used very liberally, especially in soups and food with sauces. In China, Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia, to name a few countries, you can expect that your soups and sauces will contain MSG by default. Many parents who live and travel in Asia complain that excessive MSG causes dehydration, lethargy, and mood swings with some younger children (and many adults are also found to be sensitive to excessive MSG). If concerned, request for your food to be prepared without any MSG, or choose MSG-free restaurants, increasingly available across the region.

Bare Necessities

In general, availability and the condition of public toilets in Asia leave much to be desired. Of course, there are exceptions to this rule. Singapore and Japan for example, typically provide some of the cleanest public conveniences to be found anywhere in the world. Also, in each country, there are certain locations, such as hotels and airports where hygiene standards are going to be at international levels. However, it is good practice to always carry your own tissues, and wet wipes with you when traveling in Asia. Also, to address this problem, in many Asian cities, you can also find special antiseptic wet-wipes, which are very handy when dealing with some of the lesser public conveniences.

It is also worth noting that, restaurants/coffee-shops do not always provide their own toilets for guest use, and more than likely share facilities with other establishments. This is true for even larger malls, and good quality restaurants in hygiene conscious Singapore. So, the old trick of, grabbing an unwanted cup of coffee or a drink at a restaurant, just to be able to use the facilities is not always a solution in Asia.

Similarly, availability of baby changing rooms varies immensely across the region. In Singapore, and Hong Kong for example, changing facilities are readily available in most shopping malls, one almost on each floor. However, when you are off the beaten track, even some good quality hotels may not provide child changing facilities.

Breast Feeding in Public

As a general rule of thumb, if you decided to breast feed in public, regardless of how discrete you are being, expect to be stared at. The good news is, across most of the region, this is no more sinister than surprise and interest on the part of the locals. If in doubt, you may want to retreat to a quiet corner, back of a restaurant, or baby changing facilities.

My Child is a Model!

If your children are under four or five years old, and/or blonde or with naturally curly hair, expect to be approached in parts of Asia by total strangers wanting to take photos of your child!

Again, there is nothing sinister about this request. They just want to capture the -cute factor- and share this amazing image with their friends and families.

You will typically be approached by Japanese, Korean, and Chinese ladies, who will want to pose with your child, and take each other s photos. However, there seems to be no age or gender limit to this interest, over the years, our little ones have been photographed by business people in suits, restaurant chefs, and the odd octogenarian in small villages.

Asia s Love for Children

One thing is for sure. Wherever you go to in Asia with your young family, you will find the locals ever helpful and highly interactive with your little ones. Asian s love children, they love their own children, and also the children of foreign tourists.

My advice is, make the most of this, and allow your children to interact with the local population, be it your villa team at your rental Bali villa, or a chef in a Chinese restaurant, or the old lady selling flower garlands outside a temple in Thailand!

Most important of all, don t feel like you have to wait till the kids are older before you can visit Asia. Have a go; both you and the children will love this colourful part of the world.

Enjoy your Asian holiday.

Many happy returns

REINZ House Sales And Median Prices Slip in April... | Stuff.co.nz

The number of national residential property sales hit a six-year record for the April month but median house prices slipped back from a high in March.

Figures released by the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) show 7104 residential property sales for April, a 25 per cent rise on the same month in 2012 and the highest April sales number for six years.

However, April sales fell 12.6 per cent compared with March.

Four regions recorded an increase in sales volume in April compared to March, with Central Otago Lakes recording an increase of 11 per cent, followed by Manawatu/Wanganui with 2 per cent.

Sales volumes in Auckland increased 30 per cent for the month of April 2013 compared to the month of April 2012, but fell 16 per cent compared with March this year.

Manawatu/Wanganui recorded an increase of 36.5 per cent in April residential sales compared with April last year, followed by Taranaki with a 36 per cent rise from the same month last year.

The national median price declined 2.4 per cent to $390,500 compared to March after reaching a new record high of $400,000 last month, but remained 7 per cent higher than April 2012.

REINZ said Auckland and Canterbury prices were continuing to have an impact with Auckland recording the second-largest increase in median price for the month compared with April last year, and Canterbury the third-largest increase in median price.

Median prices in Auckland from April to April rose $65,000 but again were down on March, $7000 or 1.2 per cent with Auckland City's median price dropping 7.8 per cent for the same period.

Together, Auckland and Canterbury accounted for 92 per cent of the increase in the national median price over the past 12 months.

Four of New Zealand's 12 regions recorded a drop in the median price. Central Otago Lakes recorded the largest fall, down 10 per cent followed by Hawke's Bay, down 6.4 per cent and Nelson/Marlborough, down 2.2 per cent.

Taranaki recorded the largest increase in median price compared to April 2012, rising 12.9 per cent, followed by Auckland with 13.3 per cent and Canterbury-Westland with 10 per cent.

REINZ chief executive Helen O'Sullivan, said April was notable for the surge in prices and sales of mid-level homes in many parts of the country.

"Several regions appear to be benefiting from the tail-wind generated by the strength of house prices in Auckland and Christchurch," she said.

Of the residential properties sold last month, more than 50 per cent sold for under $400,000. A further 25 per cent sold for between $400,000 and $599,000.

Houses took 34 days to sell in April, three days longer than March.
