From coach to sex offender

Coach Matthew Ryndak showed an intense interest in teen basketball players that alarmed parents.

2003-07: Ryndak works as a middle school gym teacher and basketball coach at Leigh Elementary in Norridge. While there, parents note his controlling personality, according to one father, Stephen Frey.

Nov. 1, 2006-Feb. 28, 2007: Ryndak works as an assistant basketball coach at Ridgewood High School in Norridge. Frey's son complains about obsessive texting and calls from Ryndak.

May 2007: Ryndak is hired as head basketball coach at Johnsburg High School. Over the summer, he repeatedly asks a Johnsburg community booster to contact Frey and ask him to move his son to Johnsburg.

Late 2007: Johnsburg High basketball player Bob Hutchinson receives odd texts and calls from Ryndak, including one in which Ryndak asks the then-16-year-old about his pubic hair, according to Hutchinson and a Johnsburg police report.

July 2008: Hutchinson's mother, Mary Lou, contacts school officials after learning of the phone conversation. Another parent, Scott Dixon, also complains to school officials.

August 2008: The Hutchinsons and Dixons complain to Johnsburg police, who find no evidence of criminal wrongdoing.

Oct. 13, 2008:Mary Lou Hutchinson writes to Johnsburg High School Principal Kevin Shelton, questioning why no disciplinary action has been taken.

Oct. 23, 2008: Ryndak resigns.

Oct. 29, 2008: A third parent complains to Johnsburg police, saying Ryndak has purchased an iPod Touch for his son. The father inquires about getting a restraining order against Ryndak after learning Ryndak has made derogatory statements in an email to his son, a police report states.

2009: Ryndak begins a new job as an assistant basketball coach for Crete-Monee High School, which later hires him as a full-time physical education teacher and coach during the 2010-11 season. He helps turn the team around with a 25-4 record.

May 2011: Ryndak is put on administrative leave after school officials learn that the Department of Children and Family Services is investigating an allegation of sexual abuse. He is charged with eight counts of aggravated sexual abuse against a teenage boy.

Nov. 2, 2011: Ryndak pleads guilty to four counts of aggravated sexual child abuse. He is sentenced to four years' probation and mental health counseling. He is labeled a sex offender, and his teaching certificate is revoked.

Yifat Oren: I'm A Celebrity Wedding Planner, Get Me Out Of Here

Sometimes the thing you're known for is not at all how you imagine yourself.

In my case, being described as a "celebrity" wedding planner always leaves me bemused. I'm certainly not a celebrity, and though some of my clients have achieved fame, most go out of their way to remove themselves from the limelight. I would gladly name drop, but I find it to be a big bore, especially in Los Angeles, where so many deem themselves a "celebrity" of sorts, even wedding planners. If you really want to know who my famous clients are, I am more than sure you can easily find that out through Google and a myriad of search engines and blogs.

For my part, I prefer to view myself as a seasoned professional, providing impeccable service to the world's most discerning clientele. I pride myself in the team caliber I have built, the creativity of our design and our ability to execute couture celebrations. To earn a top spot in my field, I have overcome many challenges over the nearly 15 years I have been in this business. And during this time, I cannot think of one moment when celebrity mongering came into play. My goal is to do work that inspires me, not aggressively hunt down a celebrity clientele, which turns out is not so uncommon in my field of work.

As a descriptor, the word "celebrity" can cause plenty of excitement, but its over-use renders the term about as meaningful and specific as the word "supergreat." Look up "wedding planner" in any state and you'll get lists of thousands of "celebrity" wedding planners. Anyone who has ever read an issue of US Weekly, it seems, can adopt the moniker and claim they can deliver Hollywood magic to an Omaha bride. This usually involves heavy doses of sparkle, shiny fabrics, and complicated up-dos.

Likewise, television programs dedicated to weddings tell stories of women who want to be like their favorite "star" on their big day, or worse, morph into divas or bridezillas who feel entitled to devastate their family's finances in service of their "dream wedding." I am mystified by the idea of spending money you don't have on a wedding just to keep up with people you've never actually met.

I think the constant media coverage of Hollywood is a huge disservice to our sense of self. We compare our lives to manufactured, professionally styled images of people and events, not real people. Just like those angular, pore-less models you see in magazines who have been air brushed, so too are the reporting of celebrity weddings worked over by professionals. You can read all about the gorgeous items featured in Kim Kardashian's wedding, but chances are, those were paid sponsorships.

Perhaps that is what I object to the most, the idea of a wedding as a product commercial or illusion-fueled fantasy. I understand how the economics work - celebrities beget press coverage and if your bracelet/watch/car/wedding dress is wrapped around the celebrity, your bracelet/watch/car/wedding dress is going to become more sought after. Having been behind the scenes, might I suggest that much of the frenzy surrounding celebrity weddings is a fabrication and trying to emulate it is an exercise in futility?

I remember vividly the day of Kevin Costner and his bride Christine's wedding at their ranch in Aspen, Colorado. I was busy running around with my team putting out the usual fires, and calming a few frayed nerves. I was so consumed with my work on the ranch that I wasn't really aware of the media frenzy that the wedding was causing in this small mountain town. It was not until I was getting ready to line up the wedding party that I looked up at the hillside overlooking the property and my mouth nearly dropped open to see it covered with photographers and many many long lenses. And I thought to myself, what is it these people are trying to capture? What story are they trying to tell? Having witnessed celebrity nuptials several times since that day, I can attest to the following; there is no special story, celebrity weddings are like all other weddings, they have snafus, annoying family members, bouquets that need to be fixed, toasts you could have lived a lifetime without. It's a wedding, that's it, no more nor less. If you are still vested in fairytales, may I suggest the Brothers Grimm, they were my favorite. When I was eight.

Hollywood doesn't hold a monopoly on magic or creativity or perfection. Authentic, magical moments happen when people express who they really are at their weddings. It happens when a child interrupts the ceremony to scream that they love the bride, making everyone laugh. Sometimes it happens when no one is watching, and the father of the groom hugs his son for the first time in years. Weddings, no matter how lavish, are intimate and personal and ought to be low on show and high on warmth. I have no interest in weddings that serve to imitate someone else's life. What I am passionate about is celebrating the real life of my clients and would rather be known for my lack of illusions than my celebrity roster.

Mayor calls for 'unified, peaceful closure' of Occupy Eugene camp

EUGENE, Ore. - Violence that put a man in the hospital with life-threatening injuries after a fight at the Occupy Eugene camp prompted the mayor to call a special meeting of the City Council and call on the community for the "unified, peaceful closure of the camp."

"This has caused me to see the wisdom in moving sooner than originally decided.?The safety of the public and our officers has to be foremost for us," Mayor Kitty Piercy said at the outset of the special meeting Tuesday at noon. "I ask Occupy Eugene, the broader community and council to come together in unified support of the peaceful closure of the camp."?

The Council voted 5-2 to direct the City Manager to dismantle the camp and restore the site "as soon as practicable."

The Council also voted 7-0 to expand the car camping ordinance to include tents.

"It didn't go in the direction we had hoped it would go," Councilor Andrea Ortiz said of the city's efforts to accomodate Occupy Eugene.

To help mitigate the impact, City Manager Jon Ruiz said city staff prepared?the ordinance to allow tent camping at churches that allows people who are homeless to camp in cars at approved locations.

Police Chief Pete Kerns went over a number of violent incidents his officers have responded to in recent weeks, including a man hospitalized after being attacked by a man with an ax.

The most recent incident Monday night involved a fight that put a man in the hospital with injuries that may threaten his life, Kerns said.

"I would defend anyone's right to protest any time, any where," Councilor Mike Clark said. "I don't believe camping is necessary to do it."

Councilor George Brown indicated the violence had "crossed a threshold."

"I just see this as following our original plan, which I think was very sound," he said. "We just have to speed it up."

Councilor Pat Farr said the City should have dealt with this situation earlier. He called the camp's appeal to a troublemaking element "predictable."

"As far as when this should be shut down, immediate is not soon enough for me," George Poling said. He voiced confidence in the police chief's plan to close the camp.

Not all of the Councilors were eager to close the camp.

"I would never have voted to establish a homeless camp, but it happened," Councilor Taylor said.

She questioned the chief of police on where the people in the camp came from and where they would go after the camp closes.

She asked why police couldn't just ask people who commit crimes in the camp to move.

"If these same people were down by the river or down by the bus station and something happened, you would respond to that?" Taylor said.

After the Council voted 5-2 to disband the camp, they opened a public hearing on a proposal to expand the definition of car camping to include tents.

Members of the public affiliated with the Occupy Eugene movement questioned the proposal, saying the program is full and that the council was trying to break up the camp to hide the problem of homelessness.

"Where are you going to put these people?" said "Big" John McCahill, the camp's cook. "There's nowhere for them to go except back to the streets."

"The best way to make changes is to get involved and infiltrate the organization that you want to affect," Councilor Ortiz said.

Councilor Clark recalled Cahill's past testimony calling for a civil society where people work together to solve problems.

"It's eliminated the chance to camp in this one particular park," Councilor Clark said, "but it has not eliminated that opportunity to work together."

Swedish reporters sentenced to 11 yrs in Ethiopia (AP)

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia ? A court in Ethiopia on Tuesday sentenced two Swedish journalists to 11 years in prison on charges of supporting terrorism after the two illegally entered the country with an ethnic Somali rebel group in a case that has been criticized by media rights groups.

Judge Shemsu Sirgaga ruled that the two freelance journalists ? Johan Persson and Martin Schibbye ? will serve "rigorous imprisonment" following their convictions last week.

Ethiopian troops had captured Persson and Schibbye six months ago during a clash with rebels in eastern Ethiopia's restive Somali region, a no-go area for reporters. Ethiopia considers the rebel group a terrorist organization, and it is very difficult for journalists to gain access to the region. Rights groups say that is so abuses there are not exposed.

The judge has accused the Ogaden National Liberation Front ? or ONLF ? of organizing the Swedes' journey starting in London. Outlawed groups in many countries frequently facilitate the travels of reporters in order to have their version of events told.

There was no visible reaction to the sentencing from the two journalists. The defendants' lawyers plan to hold a meeting at the Swedish Embassy later Tuesday to discuss the possibility of an appeal.

In Sweden, Foreign Ministry spokesman Anders Jorle called the sentencing expected but regrettable. He said Sweden has been in contact with the Ethiopian government over the court case "at a high level."

Their Swedish lawyer, Thomas Olsson, could not be immediately reached for comment but told national broadcaster SVT that the sentence was a disappointment, but that he and his clients had not yet decided if they would appeal.

"We will try to adjust to the new situation and help them as much as possible," he said, noting that an appeal can take up to two years and that the alternative would be for them to try to get pardoned.

"The latter means that they have to confess to these crimes and apologize, which of course is a hard thing to do when you regard yourself innocent. That's why an appeal is natural, but it's a tough decision. That's what Martin and Johan are up against in the coming 15 days," Olsson said.

Persson and Schibbye are both freelance contributors to the Sweden-based photojournalism agency Kontinent. Schibbye is also a writer. The two regularly had their work published in national newspapers in Sweden and Norway.

The pair said they had been gathering news about a Swedish oil company that is exploring Ethiopia's Somali region for oil. Sweden's foreign minister, Carl Bildt, was a member of the board of the company ? Lundin Petroleum ? between 2000 and 2006, and left the board when he was appointed foreign minister.

Persson and Schibbye have acknowledged that they entered Ethiopia illegally.

Jonas Nordling, chairman of The Swedish Union of Journalists, called Tuesday's sentencing "a setback for journalism, and it's a personal tragedy for Martin and Johan and their families. We will do all we can to support them."

"It's clear that it's a political sentence. A heavy responsibility now lies on the Swedish government to solve this on a political level," he said, noting that the freedom of the press must be protected and defended.

Swedish government officials have said that the two Swedes were on a "journalistic mission," and have pushed for the two to be freed.

The international community has closely followed the terror trial against the Swedes. Rights groups and diplomats say Ethiopia's anti-terrorism proclamation restricts freedom of expression and is used as a tool to crack down on dissent.

Amnesty International said it believes the two Swedes are "prisoners of conscience, prosecuted because of their legitimate work."

GOP candidates' spouses, kids campaign as Iowa voting approaches

CONCORD, N.H. ? Mitt Romney's wife gushes about his silly side and devotion to their five sons and 16 grandchildren. Rick Santorum's college-age daughter opines online about missing the campus coffee shop and chats with friends. Jon Huntsman's daughters generate much-needed buzz for him with a joint Twitter account and online videos.

Days away from voting in the Republican presidential race, the path to the nomination is quickly becoming a family affair, with spouses and offspring pitching in and doing far more than smiling from the sidelines.

Ann Romney, Anita Perry and Callista Gingrich are starring in new TV ads for the husbands they have loyally campaigned for.

Ann Romney extols her husband's character and says, "To me, that makes a huge difference" in a candidate. Anita Perry tells the "old-fashioned American story" of how she and her husband were high school sweethearts who had to wait until he was done flying airplanes around the world for the Air Force before they could marry. Callista Gingrich wishes the nation a Merry Christmas "from our family to yours" in husband Newt Gingrich's new holiday-themed TV ad.

Candidate kids, including those born to Michele Bachmann and Ron Paul, are acting as surrogates, strategists and, in some cases, sounding boards for parents competing for the right to challenge President Barack Obama next fall.

"There are times when I wonder why I'm not sitting in the coffee shop on campus with my friends, lightheartedly discussing ('Saturday Night Live') videos, how bad the cafeteria is, what our plans are for Friday night or how absolutely swamped we are with school work," Santorum's daughter Elizabeth lamented in a recent blog post. "But this is where God wanted me."

She has taken time off from her junior year at the University of Dallas to serve as a self-described "field staffer/phone banker/chauffeur/surrogate speaker," for her father, primarily in Iowa.

Her father, who hopes Iowa's socially conservative voters turn out for him on caucus night Jan. 3, rolled out an ad late last week featuring the entire Santorum clan, including the family German shepherd, Schotzy. The spot highlights his 21-year marriage to his wife, Karen; notes that he has coached Little League; and introduces viewers to the youngest of the couple's seven children, Isabella, born in 2008 with a genetic disorder.

Sometimes, family members campaign with the candidates and other times they go it alone.

Such family involvement carries risks and benefits. The stories they tell often humanize the candidates and help voters relate to them. But the things they say, and do, can sometimes cause headaches for the campaign advisers who are left to try to figure out a way out.

Earlier in the year, as Bachmann rose in public opinion, her husband, Marcus, defended his Christian counseling business from claims that its therapies included "curing" people of being gay. With Bachmann now near the back of the Republican pack in polls, Marcus Bachmann joined her at the start of her bus tour of Iowa's 99 counties but was quickly replaced by four of their five children.

"My husband had to go home. We're small-business owners, and someone had to go home and mind the store," Bachmann told one crowd.

Done deal: Nationals get LHP Gonzalez from A's (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo has kept his eye on Gio Gonzalez for the last decade or so. Now, the left-hander is a member of Rizzo's starting rotation.

Capping trade talks that began about a month ago, the Athletics and Nationals completed a six-player swap Friday that sends Gonzalez from Oakland to Washington, where he joins a promising pitching staff that already included right-handers Stephen Strasburg and Jordan Zimmermann.

"I've known him since he was in high school in the Miami area. This is a guy I followed for years. I really like the way he competes," Rizzo said on a conference call. "I call him, in a good way, a sore loser."

Oakland gets four players in the deal: catcher Derek Norris, right-handers A.J. Cole and Brad Peacock, and left-hander Tommy Milone. The Nationals also received minor league right-hander Robert Gilliam, who went 12-7 with a 5.04 ERA and 156 strikeouts for Class-A Vancouver this year.

A's general manager Billy Beane said he nearly took another offer but in the end preferred the prospects Washington sent.

"I told everyone I spoke to, we'd leverage one team against the other," Beane said. "We were giving up a pitcher, and the ability to acquire three very good major league prospects who were pitchers swung it for us."

The 26-year-old Gonzalez went 16-12 last season ? a career high for wins ? with a 3.12 ERA in 32 starts and was selected to his first All-Star game. He has reached 200 innings the past two seasons.

"He brings a presence in our rotation. He's had success. He's been a workhorse. He's very, very young," Rizzo said. "Gives us a young core of starting pitchers at the major league level that really is in the realm of something we've never had here before."

ESPN.com first reported the agreement Thursday and Gonzalez confirmed to The Associated Press that the deal was in place, pending a physical.

Gonzalez will be slotted between Strasburg and Zimmermann, two hard throwers who have come back from reconstructive elbow surgery and are considered cornerstones of the Nationals' attempt to finally become contenders. After finishing last in the NL East in three consecutive seasons, Washington went 80-81 and wound up in third place in 2011.

"We think that we're vastly improved over last year," Rizzo said.

At season's end, the GM made clear his top priorities this offseason were adding a top-line starting pitcher and an outfielder. The Nationals are still in the market for a "long-term, permanent fit" in center field, Rizzo said.

After failing to land free-agent pitcher Mark Buehrle, who signed with the Miami Marlins, the Nationals "stepped up our efforts" to improve their rotation, Rizzo said, which led to trade talks with the A's.

Beane is in rebuilding mode, having previously dealt starter Trevor Cahill to Arizona to stockpile more talent in the farm system. The A's went 74-88 last season and haven't posted a winning record or earned a playoff berth since 2006.

Beane said he is making moves in hopes of being able to move into a new stadium in San Jose in a few years. He said he expects to hear soon from Commissioner Bud Selig whether the team can build a new ballpark some 40 miles south in San Jose despite the San Francisco Giants owning the territorial rights to technology-rich Santa Clara County.

"For us to compete, we're going to have to have a new stadium," Beane said. "I don't think there was a move we could have made that would have put us in position to compete with Anaheim and Texas and what they have."

Gonzalez has been the subject of trade talks all offseason, with many teams interested in adding a proven starter.

"He's won a lot of games on a mediocre club," Rizzo said about Gonzalez. "Sixteen wins on the Oakland A's last year was quite a feat."

Peacock and Milone made their major league debuts in September, Norris hit 20 homers at Double-A Harrisburg, and the 19-year-old Cole went 4-7 with a 4.04 ERA at Class-A Hagerstown.

"To acquire a player like (Gonzalez), you need to give up some painful players in return, and we've done just that, four players that are near and dear to our hearts because we drafted them," Rizzo said.

NOTES: In other moves, the A's designated C Landon Powell and OF Jai Miller for assignment.

12 Best Hip-Hop Christmas Songs Of All Time

From a Run-D.M.C. classic to raps with not-so-merry sentiments, here's MTV News' nontraditional playlist.
By Rob Markman

Kanye West
Photo: Ben Hider/Getty Images

Sure, Michael Bublé and Justin Bieber are the current Christmas crown holders, but what if your yuletide tastes require a harder edge? While rappers aren't exactly known for spreading holiday cheer, hip-hop has given fans plenty of rap carols. Run-D.M.C.'s 1987 classic "Christmas in Hollis" may be the most-popular, but new-schoolers like Ludacris and Kanye West have kept rap's Xmas tradition alive.

If you've grown tired of listening to Nat King Cole's 1946 "The Christmas Song" or even Mariah Carey's more recent 1994 hit "All I Want for Christmas Is You," MTV News has compiled a 12-song playlist of rap's best Christmas-themed hits.

"Christmas in Hollis," Run-D.M.C.
No doubt the greatest rap carol ever recorded, this 1987 classic found Run and partner-in-rhyme D.M.C. rapping about Christmas in their Hollis, Queens, New York, neighborhood. Who could forget Run spitting about finding Santa's wallet with $1 million in it? Or D.M.C.'s verse that toasted his mother's collard-greens-and-mac-and-cheese Christmas dinner?

"Christmas Rappin'," Kurtis Blow
Run-D.M.C. may have done it best, but Kurtis Blow did it first when he recorded "Christmas Rappin' " in 1979. It's not hard to figure out how Kurtis Blow became rap's first bankable solo star — he represented something fresh and original. Putting a new twist on the Christmas carol, Blow rapped, "Don't you give me all that jive about things you wrote before I was alive/ 'Cause this ain't 1823 or even 1970." Take that Santa!

"Christmas in Harlem," Kanye West featuring Big Sean, Pusha T, et al
Leave it to Kanye West to present the grandest rap carol with "Christmas in Harlem." Not only did the song feature the Louis Vuitton Don and his G.O.O.D. Music team, 'Ye also grabbed Dipset MCs Cam'ron, Jim Jones and Vado in addition to Musiq Soulchild, Cyhi da Prynce and Teyana Taylor to join in on the festivities. Produced by Hit-Boy, the six-minute, 32-second track found each of the rappers giving a different take on the holidays. Yeezy, who plays Bad Santa, recounts a December 25 sexual escapade, while Jim Jones goes on a shopping spree. Sounds like a hodgepodge, but in the end it all came together quite nicely.

"Christmas Rap," the Treacherous 3
Every hip-hop fan should watch the 1984 cult classic "Beat Street" at least once in life. Kudos to those old enough to remember the Treacherous Three's hilarious "Christmas Rap," on which the Bronx, New York, MCs collaborated with Doug E. Fresh and dissed Santa for putting bootleg gifts under the tree.

"Ludacrismas," Ludacris
If Ludacris was cast in the 2007 holiday film "Fred Claus," why wouldn't he add to the movie's soundtrack? On "Ludacrismas," the ATL MC gets busy by rapping lyrics like, "I tell 'em all I want for Christmas is two gold front teeth." If not for the beat's persistent sleigh bells, this one could bang all year round.

"Santa Claus Goes Straight to the Ghetto," Snoop Dogg
Who says gangstas can't roast chestnuts on an open fire? In the 1990s, Death Row Records made their bones making murderous music, but even the label's menacing Suge Knight got into the holiday spirit. In 1996 he dropped the amazingly titled Christmas on Death Row. While the album's cover featured Santa in an electric chair, the actual disc had some more appropriate holiday tunes. Snoop Dogg, Tha Dogg Pound and the late Nate Dogg collaborated on the funky "Santa Claus Goes Straight to the Ghetto." Looks like murder wasn't always the case.

"Deck da Club," the Ying Yang Twins
Leave it to the Ying Yang Twins to transform "Deck the Halls" into a crunk club anthem. The highlight is when Kaine and brother D-Roc take the melody from "Jingle Bells" and apply it to the gentlemen's club, singing, "We gonna keep on spendin' that dough, just to see her do her thang/ Makin' her booty roll, but just don't spill my drank." Strippers celebrate Christmas too.

"Bad Santa Intro," Jim Jones featuring Sen and Shoota
No rapper has consistently represented more for St. Nick than Dipset's Jim Jones. In 2008, Jimmy dropped A Tribute to Bad Santa the second holiday album in his catalog. It was totally street though and included the standout "Bad Santa Intro," where Capo rhymed about sending commissary to his friends locked in prison and the rising price of snow and poverty in the 'hood.

"Jingle Bellz," Juelz Santana and Starr
Jim Jones isn't the only Dipset MC who gets into the holiday spirit. Juelz Santana got cozy with R7B singer Starr on a remixed version of "Jingle Bells" — with a z at the end, of course. I mean, who wouldn't want to go dashing through the snow in a four-door white Bentley?

"Cold Chillin' Christmas," the Juice Crew
In the 1980s, Marley Marl's Juice Crew was a lyrical juggernaut. Comprised of MC Shan, Roxanne Shanté, Big Daddy Kane, Masta Ace, Craig G and Kool G. Rap, the Juice Crew released some of the rawest raps in their day. They also showed diversity in 1988 by releasing "Cold Chillin' Christmas." Definitely worth a listen.

"The Christmas Song," David Banner
Mississippi MC David Banner has never been one to bite his tongue, and on "The Christmas Song," he stays true to form. On December 23, 2003, Banner released his second solo album, MTA2: Baptized in Dirty Water, and on it was the grim-sounding "Christmas Song." Don't let the song title fool you: DB did not spread any holiday cheer. Instead, on the song's hook, he sings, "It's wintertime and we still cannot find a job/ We fill out applications but you treat us like we're slobs/ So we rob and we steal 'cause we're tryna get a meal." Santa better watch his back.

"Merry Muthaf---in' Xmas," Eazy-E
Now you know Eazy-E couldn't just do a traditional Christmas carol. The West Coast legend did make a classic, however, when he recorded "Merry Muthaf---in' Xmas," a pornographic yet hilarious interpolation of "Jingle Bells." Trust us, it's not for the squeamish.

Spectacular Photos: Astronaut Sees Dazzling Comet From Space Station (SPACE.com)

An astronaut living in space has captured an unprecedented view of a comet from orbit in a jaw-dropping set of photos taken over a nighttime Earth.

The amazing images show comet Lovejoy, which survived a trip through the sun's atmosphere last week. They were snapped by veteran NASA astronaut Daniel Burbank, who is currently commander of the International Space Station.

?

And even for a seasoned spaceflyer, the sight was amazing to behold.

It was "the most amazing thing I've ever seen in space," Burbank said in a NASA video. "And that's saying an awful lot because every day is filled with amazing things."

Burbank took about 100 photographs of comet Lovejoy as it rose above Earth at night on Wednesday (Dec. 21). At the time, the space station was sailing 240 miles (386 kilometers) above Tasmania, Burbank said. Then the long, bright tail of the comet began rising up from the Earth's horizon.

"I had no idea what it was; it was a long green glowing arc," Burbank said in the video, which was recorded in an interview with WDIV-TV in Detroit. "It turns out that it ended up being a comet." [Astronaut's amazing comet photos and video]

Burbank is in the middle of a six-month mission to the International Space Station. He leads a three-man crew (two Russian cosmonauts round out the team) and is preparing to welcome three more astronauts on Friday (Dec. 23). A Russian Soyuz spacecraft carrying the new crewmembers launched on Wednesday.

Comet Lovejoy was discovered on Nov. 27 by Australian amateur astronomer Terry Lovejoy. The comet was estimated to be about 660 feet (200 meters) wide, larger than two football fields, when it was first seen.

The comet was quickly identified as a so-called Kreutz comet, a comet on a path that flies extremely close to the sun. Then, on Dec. 15, comet Lovejoy plunged into the sun's outer atmosphere.

The comet zoomed within 87,000 miles (140,000 kilometers) of the sun's surface, and many astronomers predicted it would not survive such a close solar encounter. But comet Lovejoy defied the odds and re-emerged on the other side of the sun. The event stunned astronomers and was captured by several sun-watching observatories in space.

The swing near the sun did rip comet Lovejoy's tail clean off, but over the last week the comet has grown a new tail of gas blown back by the solar wind.

"When it disappeared behind the sun, I think astronomers thought it would not appear again, it would probably burn up," Burbank said. "But it's probably the most spectacular thing that you can imagine."

Flyers coach Laviolette shoves Stars' Ott in tunnel scuffle

Philadelphia Flyers coach Peter Laviolette exchanged words with Dallas Stars tough guy Steve Ott, and then gave Ott a shove, after the first period of Wednesday's game in Dallas.

Ott appeared to block the coach?s path back toward the dressing room as the teams were leaving the ice. Laviolette responded by trying to move the Stars forward out of his way.

After the game, Ott said the confrontation was all about allowing the Stars to exit first as a courtesy in their own building.

"It's disrespect of our building, just let our team off, it's not a big deal," Ott said. "He obviously thought that he has a higher power than everybody else and a little bit more arrogance. Of all the coaches in the whole NHL, that's probably the first time I've seen that.

"I would never do that if I was in Philadelphia in their building and had to walk through their lineup. Just let us go and show a little respect, that's all."

Laviolette refused to comment on the incident after the game, instead wanting to focus on how the Flyers' win put the team back atop the Eastern Conference standings.

"Unfortunately, the Blackhawks won," Laviolette said, meaning that the Flyers would not be atop the NHL standings, just the East. "We should probably keep it about the game because it was such a big win for our team

Ott continued to get chirpy in the second period with the Flyers? bench. Marc-Andre Bourdon dropped his gloves to try to fight Ott, but Ott never engaged him.

"I was trying to stand up for my partners," said Bourdon. "If he's chirping at others, just fight me but then Morrow got in there. He [Ott] turned around first... He's just a [bleep]."

At the end of the second period, the Flyers were instructed by officials to leave the ice through the Zamboni door at the far end of the rink.

The Flyers won the game, 4-1.

The NHL's Director of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell will get to make the call of whether or not Laviolette was in the wrong, according to Darren Dreger of TSN.ca.

(AP) ? Eight U.S. soldiers have been charged in the death of a fellow GI, a Chinese-American who apparently shot himself in Afghanistan after being subjected to what a community activist said were assaults and ethnic taunts from his comrades.

Pvt. Danny Chen, a 19-year-old from New York's Chinatown neighborhood, was found in a guard tower in Kandahar province Oct. 3 with what the Army said appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

In a statement, the Army said Wednesday that eight soldiers in his company were charged with crimes ranging from dereliction of duty to negligent homicide and manslaughter.

Military officials gave no details on exactly what role the soldiers are alleged to have played in Chen's death. But a community activist raised the possibility that their bullying drove him to suicide.

Chen's fellow soldiers dragged him across the floor, threw stones at the back of his head, forced him to hold liquid in his mouth while upside down as part of an apparent hazing, and called him "Jackie Chen" in a mocking accent in a reference to the action star Jackie Chan, according to Elizabeth OuYang, president of the New York chapter of the Organization of Chinese Americans.

The details of his alleged hazing came from Facebook and email messages, discussions with cousins and a few pages of Chen's journal released by the Army, OuYang said at a Chinatown news conference.

"Whether suicide or homicide, those responsible for mistreating Danny are responsible for his death," she said.

Chen's relatives said they were encouraged by the charges.

"We realize that Danny will never return, but it gives us some hope," said Yen Tao Chen, his father, speaking through a translator. Chen's parents are immigrants from China.

Community activists said the Army still has not fully explained the circumstances of Chen's death. They are meeting with Pentagon officials Jan. 4.

"We need to know the whole truth," Rep. Nydia Velazquez, D-N.Y., said. She added: "Racial discrimination and intolerance have no place in today's military."

The Army announced earlier it is investigating Chen's death.

Chen was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, based in Fort Wainwright, Alaska.

The Army identified the soldiers charged as 1st Lt. Daniel J. Schwartz, Staff Sgt. Blaine G. Dugas, Staff Sgt. Andrew J. Van Bockel, Sgt. Adam M. Holcomb, Sgt. Jeffrey T. Hurst, Spc. Thomas P. Curtis, Spc. Ryan J. Offutt and Sgt. Travis F. Carden. Their hometowns were not released.

VanBockel, Holcomb, Hurst, Curtis and Offutt were charged with the most serious offenses, including involuntary manslaughter, negligent homicide, and assault and battery.

Schwartz, the only officer among the accused, was charged with dereliction of duty.

The soldiers are still in Afghanistan but have been assigned to a different base, removed from their duty positions and placed under closer supervision, the military said.

Android 4.0.3 source code being pushed to AOSP

AOSP

Googler Jean-Baptiste Queru has just announced the push of Android 4.0.3 to the Android Open Source Project tree.  This build is for the Motorola Xoom (U.S. Versions), the Nexus S (all versions), and of course the mysid and yakju builds of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus.  Yes, one set of sources and build number for several different devices -- that's a first for AOSP and if it's pulled off well (I'll bet it is, these fellows know their schtuff) it's a big leap in Android development.  As JBQ mentions, this is the first time AOSP works for a tablet, the first time it works on a device that's neither a Nexus or an Android Developer Phone, and the first time it works for devices on Verizon.  Mr. Queru also has this to say:

Over the years, I've released 50 different versions of Android in AOSP, not counting the SDK and CTS, and I think that this is the best release ever.

Those are the kinds of words we all love to hear.  Wait for the announcement that it's ready for syncing, then prepare yourselves -- this is going to be one helluva ride.

Yoho Bike Hotel: a hotel for the two-tired

The world's biggest bike manufacturer runs a hotel with bike-friendly hallways and elevators, and staff who do repairs and tune-ups.

? A local, slice-of-life story from a Monitor correspondent.

Giant, the world?s biggest bike manufacturer, has built a one-of-a-kind beach resort for cyclists.

Taiwan-based Giant operates the 68-room Yoho Bike Hotel, which opened in February 2009, to promote leisure cycling. For at least $166 a night, Yoho guests can pedal through the corridors and ride their wheels into extra-wide elevators and guest rooms with elevated storage racks. Hotel staff members do repairs and cleanups. Travel industry authorities say they know of no other hotel in the world with such extensive services just for bike-riding guests.

Taiwan?s bike industry grew 20 percent last year to $1.5 billion. Cycling increased in Taiwan on pace with the 2008 global oil price surge.

Giant hopes the resort will help keep its sales at current levels of about 5.5 million units a year.

?This is mainly to promote bike riding in Taiwan,? says Chen Jung-chiang, a division chief in the firm?s head sales office.

Guests without bikes can rent them starting at $6 per hour. Two-lane back roads outside the resort lure cyclists.

?There are quite a few roads, and they?re challenging because of the strong winds,? recalls Huang Wei-lun, a Taipei insurance worker who spent three nights at Yoho last year for a bike race. ?If you need any service, the [hotel] will help you fix the bike or wash it up.?

Stocks higher amid upbeat euro outlook

By msnbc.com news services

Wall Street moved higher Friday as investors were attracted to risk assets, with the euro higher and key euro zone bond yields down.

Reflecting improved investor confidence, benchmark Italian bond yields stabilized below 7 percent and Spanish yields also fell. Still, worries persisted over possible sovereign credit downgrades to the euro zone members.

European shares were slightly lower, but mining stocks rose, tracking metals. Copper prices added nearly 2.3 percent.

The euro rose against the U.S. dollar in a rebound from recent losses.

Stocks continued to be supported by strong U.S. data from Thursday, according to Jim Paulsen, chief investment officer at Wells Capital Management in Minneapolis.

"The reality is this morning, (jobless) claims are still way down, manufacturing sectors had a nice pop and that provides a nice floor to the market," he said.

The number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits fell to a 3-1/2-year low last week and factory activity in parts of the Northeast picked up in December, data showed Thursday.

Online gamesmaker Zynga Inc was expected to make a strong debut on the Nasdaq Friday after it priced its initial public offering at $10 per share, the top end of its range.

U.S. consumer prices were flat in November as Americans paid less for cars and gasoline, while the 12-month inflation reading fell for the second straight month, which could give the Federal Reserve more room to help a still-weak economy.

Paulsen said that subdued inflation will be a long-term positive as consumers benefit from contained prices.

"That's one of the reasons you're seeing better consumer (confidence) of late," he said.

Research In Motion Ltd posted a sharp drop in profit on Thursday, offered a dismal outlook for BlackBerry shipments during the holidays and delayed an overhaul of its smartphones. The stock dropped nearly 10 percent to $13.64 in premarket trading.

Reuters contributed to this report.

Animal rights activists challenge 2006 federal law (AP)

BOSTON ? A group of animal rights activists sued the U.S. government Thursday to challenge the constitutionality of a rarely used law they say treats them like terrorists if they cause a loss in profits for businesses that use or sell animal products.

Five activists represented by the Center for Constitutional Rights filed the lawsuit in federal court in Boston, asking that the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act be struck down as unconstitutional because it has a chilling effect on lawful protest activities.

Staff attorney Rachel Meeropol said the 2006 law has left activists afraid to participate in public protests out of fear they will be prosecuted.

"There are many terms in the law that are not defined, and because of that protesters don't have notice that certain conduct is going to violate the statute and what conduct is protected by the First Amendment," Meeropol said.

"Some of my clients want to engage in simple public protests ? perhaps in front of a fur store ? to change public opinion about fur," she said. "But they feel restricted from engaging in that clearly lawful activity because under the plain language of the law, if that protest is successful in convincing consumers not to shop at that fur store, they could be charged as terrorists."

The law can be used to prosecute someone for damaging or interfering with the operations of an "animal enterprise" when a person "intentionally damages or causes the loss of any real or personal property used by an animal enterprise" or a business connected to an animal enterprise.

Meeropol said courts have interpreted "personal property" to include a loss of profits for the business.

The law also can be used to prosecute anyone who "intentionally places a person in reasonable fear of death or serious bodily injury" through threats, vandalism, harassment or intimidation.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder is the only defendant named in the lawsuit. A Justice Department representative did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

The law has been rarely used since it was enacted in 2006, but Meeropol said the cases of those who have been prosecuted instilled fear among animal rights activists.

In 2009, four activists were charged for allegedly participating in threatening demonstrations at the homes of University of California scientists who did animal research. Prosecutors also alleged that the four created or distributed a flier listing the professors' home addresses and stating, "animal abusers everywhere beware we know where you live we know where you work we will never back down until you end your abuse." A judge eventually dismissed the charges.

Two other activists were indicted in Utah in 2009 for releasing hundreds of animals from a mink farm. Both pleaded guilty to animal enterprise terrorism and were sentenced to 21 months and 24 months in prison.

A Minnesota graduate student was sentenced to six months in prison for working with other activists in a 2006 raid on a farm where dozens of breeding ferrets were let loose. Scott Ryan DeMuth pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit animal enterprise terrorism under a deal with federal prosecutors in Iowa. Prosecutors said the raid contributed to the ferret farm's closure months later and destroyed the owner's livelihood.

Ryan Shapiro, a longtime animal rights activist from Cambridge who is one of the plaintiffs in the Boston lawsuit, said he no longer conducts undercover filmed investigations of animal treatment on factory farms because he is concerned about possible prosecution.

"One of the ways the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act silences free speech is that if one obtains that footage and then brings that footage to the public about how animals are suffering on factory farms, it might affect the profits of that farm," Shapiro said. "As a result, simply bringing that information to the public and trying to educate individuals is now prosecutable as a terrorist act under the law."
